Divinity fan decodes hidden trailer runes, hinting at a major villain

Aleksandr Manin

Seven months after Divinity's reveal trailer debuted at The Game Awards, content creator WolfheartFPS says he has decoded a message hidden in plain sight, and he believes it may point to a major lore figure. The analysis was based on a behind-the-scenes video from Unit Image, the 3D animation and visual effects studio that worked on the trailer with Larian Studios.

In the footage, the clearest clues are the symbols on the crown worn by the old man shown in the trailer. WolfheartFPS argues that the signs were too small to read in the finished video, but became legible in the studio material, where the model is shown in much greater detail. He later broke down the find in his own analysis.

According to WolfheartFPS, the runes are based on Elder Futhark, an old runic alphabet. He says the inscription can be read as "chaos is coming", which fits the world of Divinity more closely than it may seem at first glance.

That interpretation lines up with the Lord of Chaos, a figure in Divinity lore. In the series, the Lord of Chaos is described as the creator of demons and is, as far as we know, trapped in Tartarus, the game's version of hell. That is why the message on the crown has immediately prompted fan theories about what the trailer may be hiding.

For now, none of this has been confirmed by Larian Studios, and Divinity still has no release date. Reports suggest the game may launch in early access first, but there is no confirmed release window yet, so the theory will remain just that for the time being.

Do you think the hidden message is teasing the return of the Lord of Chaos, or is it just atmosphere?
