Beyond Good & Evil 2 may reappear at a major 2026 showcase, rumor says

Ubisoft showed the first Beyond Good & Evil 2 trailer back in 2008. The game then vanished for nearly a decade, resurfaced with a new reveal at E3 2017 — this time as a prequel with a different concept — and in 2022 officially set the record for the longest development cycle in industry history. Now Spanish insider Nash Weedle has claimed on the Attack the Backlog podcast that Ubisoft will reveal the project again before the end of the year — and that it'll come out under a different name.

Weedle says he knows the new name, but has declined to reveal it. The logic behind a rebrand isn't hard to follow, though: since the second reveal, the game has changed so much that little remains of what was shown back then. A new title would let Ubisoft cut the project loose from its reputation as an eternal vaporware project and present it as a brand-new game instead. The insider considers The Game Awards 2026, taking place December 10, the most likely venue, though an earlier opportunity exists too — Gamescom kicks off later this month, and Ubisoft's participation there is confirmed.

On the technical side, Weedle points to the Voyager engine, which he describes as extremely flexible, potentially allowing the game to launch across a wide range of platforms. He declined to directly name Nintendo Switch 2, but hinted at it clearly enough. Officially, neither platforms nor a release window have been confirmed.

This should be treated accordingly. All of this information comes from a single person, and his track record is mixed: he's frequently accurate on Nintendo-related matters, but treated with far more caution outside that topic, and part of the community considers him unreliable in general. There's no official confirmation.

That said, the mere fact that the game is still alive is notable on its own. Series creator Michel Ancel left the project, and the industry entirely, in 2020. Ubisoft has cancelled dozens of games over the past decade, and the latest round of layoffs gutted several studios outright — Beyond Good & Evil 2 survived all of it. The last official confirmation came earlier this year, when creative director Fawzi Mesmar said development was continuing, with the company specifically noting the project hadn't been affected by the layoffs.

Eighteen years later and under a new name — is this still the game people were waiting for, or something else entirely by now?
