Square Enix Reports Digital Sales Account for 90% of Game Purchases
Square Enix has published its latest quarterly financial report, revealing that digital copies made up 90.11% of its game sales between April 1 and June 30, 2026. In total, the company shifted 7.38 million units across all platforms during the quarter. However, the document includes an important caveat: these figures apply strictly to the HD Games and MMO segments, excluding DLC, microtransactions, and mobile downloads.
Out of the total volume, Square Enix sold 6.65 million digital copies compared to just 730,000 physical units. For context, during the same period last year, the company reported 4.01 million units sold, with 3.45 million coming from digital channels and 560,000 from physical discs.
Driven by this digital shift, the company's financial performance saw a substantial boost. Square Enix's operating income skyrocketed by 88.6% year-over-year, while net sales for the first quarter of fiscal year 2026 climbed by 32.3%. The main growth drivers were Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales. Square Enix specifically noted that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth delivered stellar results following its release on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S, proving that both titles successfully capitalized on their multiplatform strategy.
The report also outlines upcoming releases scheduled for the second half of the fiscal year. The lineup features Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2 for Nintendo Switch 2, Star Ocean The Second Story R for Nintendo Switch 2, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remake for Nintendo Switch 2, Dragon Quest XI for Nintendo Switch 2, Kingdom Hearts Collection I-III, as well as Final Fantasy Resonance and Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World.
