Former EA Employee Believes Mass Effect 5 Could Be Canceled
Emmanuel Rosier, a former senior manager at Electronic Arts and Newzoo analyst, has expressed serious doubts about the future of the next Mass Effect game following the publisher's recent acquisition.
Rosier points out that while the project has been in active development since 2020, BioWare has only shown cryptic teasers and concept art. On top of that, he notes that BioWare has been facing a prolonged systemic crisis as a studio, causing its brand power to steadily decline.
The financial reality of EA's massive corporate buyout introduces even bigger risks. After delisting from the stock market, EA took on a staggering $20 billion in debt and committed to cutting annual operating costs by $700 million. Rosier believes this strict austerity course will inevitably lead to mass layoffs and asset liquidations, which will hit long-term, high-budget projects the hardest.
I will believe the next Mass Effect is happening when I see it with my own eyes.
The industry expert added that under this new corporate environment, the new owners could easily pull the plug on the game. Because outside investors share no emotional attachment to EA's historic gaming legacy, the future of the sci-fi franchise will be decided strictly by cold financial metrics.
Furthermore, Rosier suggests that EA might pivot almost entirely toward lucrative sports simulators and esports. Classic legacy franchises like Ultima and Wing Commander could either be auctioned off or licensed out to third-party developers, leaving the outlook for Mass Effect 5 looking exceptionally bleak.
