Final Fantasy VII Remake Director Says a Witcher 3 Remake Would Terrify Him

Aleksandr Manin

Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, says he would be "terrified" to take on a remake of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — but he'd still buy it on day one if it ever happened. In an interview with Radio Times Gaming, he said the game's sheer scale and workload would make the project daunting.

Hamaguchi said the enormous amount of content, the branching quest system and the size of the open world would all be major challenges. His own experience making games, he added, has only deepened his respect for his Polish colleagues and the work behind Geralt's adventures.

Hamaguchi has previously called The Witcher 3 his favorite game of all time. He has also said that the open world in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was developed with Geralt's adventures and Horizon Zero Dawn in mind. Final Fantasy series producer Yoshinori Kitase recalled that Hamaguchi nearly jumped out of his seat with excitement when he saw a trailer for The Witcher 4 featuring Ciri.

The Witcher 3 recently received a major free remaster, and a new expansion, Songs of the Past, is due in 2027. Meanwhile, Hamaguchi is finishing the final game in the remake trilogy: Final Fantasy VII Revelation is set to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 on April 8, 2027.
