From this guide, you’ll learn what tools are, what types exist and what they’re used for, as well as how to obtain beads and crafting metal. We’ll also describe in detail the purpose of each device and where to find it.

How to Acquire Tools

Tools are special devices that can be purchased from merchants for beads and crafting metal or found in the open world. They enhance Hornet’s skills and abilities; in addition, some trinkets grant effects or serve a specific function. For example, the Compass, inserted into a yellow crest slot, displays the heroine’s position on the map.

There are four types of tools:

  1. White (Silk Skill) — abilities that consume a silk spool. Used for healing or super attacks. For example, Silkspear: a powerful forward needle throw.
  2. Red (Red Tool) — active devices such as projectiles, traps, bombs, and potions, which are replenished with shell shards. For example: Straight Pin: a lightweight throwing weapon.
  3. Blue (Blue Tool) — passive combat upgrades, both defensive and offensive, usually providing extra protection, resistance to debuffs, or applying effects. For example: Druid's Eye: slightly fills the silk spool when taking damage.
  4. Yellow (Yellow Tool) — passive trinkets that help explore the world and indirectly affect Hornet’s stats. For example: Dead Bug's Purse: retains some beads after death.

Why You Need Tools

Hornet has a variety of devices from which you can create different builds. To make your adventure through the bug kingdom easier, you need to carefully select tools for each crest.

Crests are special devices for placing tools, which grant additional skills and passive effects that influence the heroine’s stats. Each crest has its own set of charm slots. Furthermore, the type of crest determines the set and style of needle attacks.

For example, for the starting crest Hunter, the best tool selection is considered to be:

  1. White Tool Silkspear.
  2. Red Tool Cogwork Wheel.
  3. Red Tool Plasmium Phial.
  4. Blue Tool Longclaw.
  5. Blue Tool Pin Badge.
  6. Yellow Tool Magnetite Brooch.
  7. Yellow Tool Magnetite Dice.

Next, we’ll describe the location of each tool from the Red, Blue, and Yellow categories. This is because white tools (Silk Skill) are Hornet’s active combat abilities, so we’ll cover those in a separate article.

How to Obtain Beads

Beads (Rosaries) are the main in-game currency, used to purchase items from merchants and buy benches, prayer beads, stations, and elevators. Red orbs can be dropped from enhanced enemies or found in the open world as various stashes: chains, baskets, altars.

How to Obtain Craftmetal

Craftmetal is a special material required by craftsmen to create advanced tools. Craftmetal can be found in the open world or bought from the merchant Pebb in Bone Bottom for 60 beads. In the later stages of the game, you’ll need to complete the quest The Lost Merchant to buy the resource from Jubilana in Songclave for 180 beads.

Straight Pin, The Marrow

Red Tool Straight Pin is a lightweight throwing weapon designed for quick attacks. Hornet can carry 12 blades.

You can find the needles near the entrance to Hunter's March. To do this, get to a small location with a door beneath the transition between biomes. Now, climb up, free the bug, and take the tool from the table.

Threefold Pin,

Red Tool Threefold Pin consists of three flat throwing blades. Hornet’s arsenal contains 10 of them.

Head to the eastern part of Greymoor and use balloons to reach the northeastern ledge. Break the stone blockage and enter the small cave where the pins are hanging from a rope.

Sting Shard

Red Tool Sting Shard is a deadly trap made of tightly woven blades. It pierces enemies that touch it with five spears. You can carry six charges with you.

Buy it in the Deep Docks from the Forge Daughter for 140 beads and a piece of craftmetal.

Tacks

Red Tool Tacks are short pins scattered on the ground. Five sharp spikes pierce any enemy that steps on them. You can scatter your entire supply on the floor. The pouch holds five charges.

Head to the center of Sinner's Road and talk to Crull and Benjin to take the quest Roach Guts. You need to kill ten Muckroaches and bring their guts to the sinners.

You’ll find the monsters in the same biome. They crawl on the ground not far from the quest givers. To speed up the process, clear the first tier, save at a bench, then kill the roaches again and bring the guts.

Longpin

Red Tool Longpin is a weighted pin with a handle, capable of piercing the toughest shells. Hornet can carry ten pins.

Climb into the nook above the transition between Shellwood and Bellhart.

Curveclaw

Red Tool Curveclaw is a curved sharp bone that spins like a boomerang, used by Hornet to knock down flying enemies. The heroine can carry eight of them.

At the end of the northwest corridor of Hunter's March lives the merchant Mottled Skarr; buy the tool from him for 140 beads.

Curvesickle

Red Tool Curved Sickle is a rounded sharp bone, an improved version of the Curveclaw.

Buy the Curveclaw, then in the third act, reach the corridor above the bell station in Far Fields. Hit four targets with the claw and give the boomerang to the ant. Return to the nearest bench and pick up the upgraded projectile.

Throwing Ring

Red Tool Throwing Ring is Shakra’s tempered throwing weapon. It bounces off enemies and hard surfaces, dealing blunt damage. You can carry ten rings at a time.

On the notice board in Bellhart, you need to take the quest Trail's End. For it to appear, you must purchase all maps from Shakra. The goal of the quest is to find the cartographer in the northwest part of Bilewater, and as a result, you will receive the rings.

Pimpillo

Red Tool Pimpillo is a cloth pouch filled with explosives. It detonates upon hitting enemies or after its fuse burns out. Hornet can carry three bombs.

Obtain a piece of craftmetal and climb to the very top of the northwest tower in Greymoor.

Conchcutter

Red Tool Conch Cutter is a spiral-shaped weapon made from hardened shell. When thrown at an angle, it can bounce off obstacles, catching the victim off guard. You can carry up to eight charges, depending on your backpack upgrade level.

Defeat the boss Raging Conchfly and enter the Coral Tower in the Sands of Karak location.

Silkshot

Red Tool Silkshot is an ancient weapon of the Weavers, which uses shell containers and silk for shooting. Depending on its level, it has different firing styles and ammo counts: 8, 12, or 15. The gun has a limited number of shots; even if you refill your silk supply, you’ll still need to visit a bench to restore ammo.

Pick up the Ruined Tool in the southeast corridor of Bilewater.

There are three ways to repair the tool:

  • Do it yourself: take it to Mount Fay and repair it for a piece of craftmetal. Fires a small silk blob, with 8 rounds in the magazine.
  • Twelfth Architect: restore it for 130 beads and a piece of craftmetal. Shoots a spread, has 12 rounds.
  • Forge Daughter: repair it for 240 beads and a shard of craftmetal. Fires a large projectile, with 15 rounds available.

Delver's Drill

Red Tool Delver's Drill is a rotating tool for drilling through bone and rock. The destructive power of the spinning drill allows its owner to descend after it. The pouch holds nine charges.

Descend to the bottom of the left wing of the Underworks and find the drill on the table.

Cogwork Wheel

Red Tool Cogwork Wheel is an expanding circular blade powered by a gear motor. It rushes forward, slicing through any enemies in its path. Hornet can carry eight discs.

Buy it in the Underworks from the Twelfth Architect for 360 beads and a piece of craftmetal.

Cogfly

Red Tool Cogfly is a winged mechanical companion that seeks out nearby enemies and attacks them. The backpack holds four flies, and all can be summoned at once.

In the center of the High Halls in the Citadel, there is a workbench where you can assemble the tool; you’ll need a shard of craftmetal for this.

Rosary Cannon

Red Tool Rosary Cannon is a repurposed bead-making machine mechanism. To reload the cannon, you need to place beads inside it.

First, you need to obtain a Simple Key. Then, get to The Forum, open the golden door, go down, and break the pipe from which the cannon will drop.

Voltvessels

Red Tool Voltvessels are transformable spheres filled with electrical energy. They can be thrown like balls to unleash an explosive discharge, or stuck into the ground like a spear to create an energy pillar. Hornet can carry ten charges.

You need to reach the penultimate floor of the Memorium and find the tool on the table at the end of the corridor.

Flintslate

Red Tool Flintslate is a sharpening plate made of cut and polished gem flint. It temporarily heats up the needle blade, igniting it with every strike and increasing its lethality. You can carry three charges.

Use a Simple Key to open a door in the central part of the Deep Docks. Go to the second vertical section and climb up, then move to the end of the nook on the right, where the plate will be lying on the table.

Snare Setter

Red Tool Snare Setter is a Weaver tool used to set their traps. It places a silk rune that ignites upon contact with enemies. Uses shell containers and the owner's own Silk. Hornet can carry five of them.

In the east of the starting area, open a door using the Needle Cello and climb into a small cave at the center of Weavenest Atla.

Flea Brew

Red Tool Flea Brew is a refreshing drink that can only be refilled at the Flea Caravan. Temporarily increases movement and attack speed. The pouch can hold 30 bottles.

Find five Lost Fleas and refill your flask with Grishkin, whose caravan is temporarily stationed between Bellhart and Greymoor.

Plasmium Phial

Red Tool Plasmium Phial is a spear-shaped vessel containing plasmium. An injection of this liquid increases health beyond the natural limit. Hornet can carry six units. You can restore more than one health cell at a time.

Reach the northwest bench in the Wormways and take the quest Alchemist's Assistant from Alchemist Zylotol. Use the Needle Phial to collect three clumps of Plasmium.

Alchemist Zylotol (1), Plasmium (2)

Needle Phial

Red Tool Needle Phial is a temporary tool designed for extracting and storing liquids. To pierce a target, the vessel must be charged to maximum pressure. Hornet receives this syringe during the Alchemist's Assistant quest. Once the heroine gives the plasmium to Zylotol, it turns into the Plasmium Phial.

Druid's Eye

Blue Tool Druid's Eye is a protective necklace made from swamp berries. When Hornet takes damage, the amulet weeps drops of green elixir, which turn into Silk.

Speak with the Moss Druid in Mosshome to start the Berry Picking quest, during which you need to bring three Mossberries.

Druid's Eyes

Blue Tool Druid's Eyes is an improved version of the Druid's Eye. To upgrade the tool, you need to find four more Mossberries and bring them to the Moss Druid.

Pollip Pouch

Blue Tool Pollip Pouch is a pouch containing a fast-acting toxin extracted from the core of a flower. It coats equipped tools with poison.

In the Shellwoods, you need to start the Rite of the Pollip quest, which is given by Greyroot. Bring him six Pollip Hearts.

Greyroot (1), Pollip Heart (2)

Fractured Mask

Blue Tool Fractured Mask is a protective device carved from an old bug skull. It protects against critical damage but shatters upon impact. The broken mask can be repaired while resting at a bench. Buy the mask from Mottled Skarr on Hunter's March for 260 beads.

Multibinder

Blue Tool Multibinder is an ornate, engraved Weaver spindle that can only be used by those who wield Silk. It increases binding duration but enhances its healing effect (restores 2 ticks of 2 health each per use).

First, liberate Bellhart and start the quest My Missing Courier from Frey. Find the courier south of the passage between the Wormways and Bone Bottom biomes. Return to the city and buy the tool for 880 beads.

Frey (1), Missing Courier (2)

Weavelight

Blue Tool Weavelight is a radiant device created by the Weavers, which passively allows you to always have at least 2 bars of silk. Defeat two Moss Mothers in the south of Weavenest Atla.

The difficulty of this fight is that you have to battle two bosses at once. They appear at different times, so try to deal your strongest blows when only one monster is on the arena. When the bugs are summoned, you’ll have to take out the small enemies first.

Sawtooth Circlet

Blue Tool Sawtooth Circlet is a flexible belt made of jagged metal teeth, attached to the hem of the cloak. A sweep of the cloak spins the blades, dealing damage to enemies. Buy it from the Twelfth Architect in the Underworks for 230 beads and a piece of craftmetal.

Injector Band

Blue Tool Injector Band is a bundle of surgical pins from the Whiteward. It is used for forcibly injecting silk deep under a bug’s shell to speed up binding.

You can find the tool on the lower level of the Whiteward in the eastern section. You need to climb to the top tier and go to the end of the corridor.

Spool Extender

Blue Tool Spool Extender is a tool for storing Silk, created in the Citadel after the fashion of a Weaver artifact. It allows you to store more Silk, exceeding the body’s natural reserves.

Take the quest The Wandering Merchant from the wish board in Songclave. Find the merchant Jubilana in the Choral Chambers. You can now buy the spool from her for 720 beads.

Reserve Bind

Blue Tool Reserve Bind is an ornate artifact from the Citadel that contains enough Silk for one binding. It is used when healing is needed but the body’s natural resources are depleted. The reserve is restored while resting at a bench.

Above the bench in the High Halls, there is a nook where the final boss fight with the Second Sentinel will take place. To start the battle, complete the quest Final Audience, in which you need to collect a mechanical heart and revive the sentinel in the Cogwork Core, then meet him at a random location in the Citadel. After the third encounter, you’ll receive the tool.

Claw Mirror

Blue Tool Claw Mirror is a theatrical prop belonging to a vain bug. When binding, it emits a blinding flash that damages enemies nearby. To get the mirror, find The Stage and kill Trobbio.

Claw Mirrors

Blue Tool Claw Mirrors are paired mirrors that produce a scorching explosion when binding, damaging enemies nearby. Start the quest Pain, Anguish and Misery in Songclave during the third act and defeat Trobbio again.

Memory Crystal

Blue Tool Memory Crystal is a stone with a reflective surface and mnemonic properties. When Hornet takes damage, the crystal transforms into a frozen figure of the heroine. If an enemy touches the silhouette, it shatters into sharp spikes, damaging the foe. To obtain the tool, find the western bench on Mount Fay, descend into the lower tunnel, and go to the end.

Snitch Pick

Blue Tool Snitch Pick is a hook-shaped tool for forcibly extracting loot from bugs and dead shells. Fire the harpoon at enemies to steal beads and shell shards from them, dealing additional damage in the process.

In the northwest of the Blasted Steps, near the passage to the Sands of Karak biome, lives the merchant Grindle. Buy the hook from him for 740 beads.

Volt Filament

Blue Tool Volt Filament is the charged organ of the slain boss Voltvyrm, whom you will encounter in the north of the Sands of Karak. Wrapping it around the thread allows you to enhance silk abilities with an electric charge.

Quick Sling

Blue Tool Quick Sling is a tension mechanism made of reed and bone, attached to a bug’s leg. It doubles the amount of throwable projectiles you can carry.

Not far from where you met Shakra in Bilewater, climb up, enter the second section, and break the ceiling support beams in the right corner. This will reveal a small secret area where you can pick up the sling.

Wreath of Purity

Blue Tool Wreath of Purity is a fragile band woven from reeds and leaves. It is designed to ward off dung larvae from the Putrified Ducts, Bilewater, Sinner's Road biomes. A damaged wreath can be repaired while resting at a bench.

Descend from the bell station in the Putrified Ducts to the lower section and move all the way east.

Longclaw

Blue Tool Longclaw is a talisman made from the claw of a large predator. It increases the range of needle attacks. Take the quest Broodfeast from the Huntress in the Putrified Ducts. You need to use the following tools to extract three types of organs from enemies:

  3. Cogwork Wheel.
  4. Architect Crest.
  5. Flintslate.
  6. Pimpillo.

Blue Tool Egg of Flealia is an image of the mythical mother of all fleas—a relic once owned by caravans of the distant past. Reduces the cost of silk abilities when at full health. Collect all 29 Lost Fleas and speak with Fleamaster Mooshka in the eastern branch of the Putrified Ducts.

Pin Badge

Shard Pendant

Yellow Tool Shard Pendant is a crude ornament usually worn by collectors and craftsmen. Allows you to collect more shell shards from defeated creatures. In the central section of The Marrow, there is a small nook. To get there, descend from the northern bench and head left.

Magnetite Brooch

Yellow Tool Magnetite Brooch is a sacred stone inscribed with a prayer for beads. All nearby loose beads are drawn to the wearer. The ornament is sold for 120 beads by Pebb from Bone Bottom.

Weighted Belt

Yellow Tool Weighted Belt is a heavy bracelet often worn by those with a wobbly gait. Its wearer stands more firmly while striking enemies, and is knocked back less when taking damage.

Head to Pilgrim's Rest in the Far Fields. The belt can be bought from Mort for 160 beads.

Barbed Bracelet

Yellow Tool Barbed Bracelet is a painful bracelet for those convinced they have not received their deserved punishment. Increases damage taken, but also boosts the damage dealt with the needle. It lies at the bottom of the Sinner's Road.

Dead Bug's Purse

Yellow Tool Dead Bug's Purse is a discarded purse that once belonged to a now-deceased bug. Allows the owner to retain some beads after defeat. Find the bug's corpse near the northern passage from the Wormways to the Bone Bottom.

Magnetite Dice

Yellow Tool Magnetite Dice are trinkets for games, made from magnetic material. Used in simple games and believed to bring luck to the owner. Hornet has about a 1 in 10 chance to ignore damage from an enemy attack.

Head west from the bell station in the Blasted Steps. Win at dice four times against Lumble The Lucky or, in the third act, buy them from Grindle in the Blasted Steps for 300 beads. You can also take the dice from Lumble's body after visiting the Choral Chambers.

Scuttlebrace

Yellow Tool Scuttlebrace is an artificial spine that fits tightly to the shell. Enhances the owner's innate flexibility, allowing for sharp backward dodges. Sold for 140 beads and a piece of craftmetal by the Twelfth Architect from the Underworks.

Silkspeed Anklets

Yellow Tool Silkspeed Anklets is an experimental invention by the Weavers. Uses silk to increase running speed.

Head to the bench in the weaver’s house in the south of the Far Fields. Move east to the door and open it with the Needle Cello, then enter the secret area at the end of the corridor.

Thief's Mark

Yellow Tool Thief's Mark is a symbol by which thieves recognize each other. Hornet will receive more beads for defeating enemies, but will lose some beads when taking damage. Sold in the Blasted Steps by Grindle for 350 beads.
