How to Fix Dying Light: The Beast Crashes, Launch Issues on AMD Graphics Cards, and Quest Bugs

Vladislav Sham

As with most major projects, the launch of Dying Light: The Beast did not go without technical difficulties — players encountered errors at startup as well as critical crashes in story missions. In this guide, we have collected all currently known issues with Dying Light: The Beast and proven ways to solve them.

Minimum System Requirements

If you haven't purchased the new game yet and haven't had a chance to try it, be sure to check the minimum system requirements before buying. Many errors and issues occur because the hardware does not meet the necessary parameters.

  • Operating System: Windows 10/11 (64-bit)
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-13400F / AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
  • RAM: 16 GB RAM
  • Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 1060 / Radeon RX 5500 XT / Intel Arc A750
  • Video Memory: 4 GB
  • DirectX: Version 12
  • Free Disk Space: 70 GB

General Fixes

Most often, the sources of problems are outdated drivers, corrupted game files, and other issues not directly related to the game itself. Sometimes, third-party programs running in the background, such as Discord, Steam, or Nvidia GeForce Experience, can disrupt stable operation. In co-op, crashes are often related to an unstable internet connection.

First of all, we recommend performing a number of basic steps to rule out issues with hardware drivers and third-party applications. Start by updating your graphics processor drivers: the latest versions from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel usually resolve many compatibility problems.

Next, verify the integrity of the game files using the built-in feature in Steam or Epic Games Store. This will automatically restore any corrupted or missing installation files.

If you are experiencing performance issues, try lowering the graphics settings — reduce the resolution, disable ray tracing, or lower shadow quality to reduce system load. It is also recommended to close background applications and overlays (Discord, Steam).

If the above basic tips didn’t help, try reinstalling the game — a clean install will remove corrupted files that may be causing crashes. Also, check for the latest Windows updates: they often contain important compatibility fixes.

Another option is to run the game in windowed mode, especially if crashes occur in fullscreen. If you are overclocking your processor or graphics card, temporarily revert to default clock speeds to rule out system instability.

Dying Light: The Beast crashes without errors on launch

Many players have reported that Dying Light: The Beast may close immediately after launch without any error notifications. Such situations are often related to corrupted temporary engine files or improperly compiled shaders. The problem can be solved with a few cleaning and recovery steps.

  1. First, open the Documents folder at C:\Users\USER_NAME\Documents\dying light the beast\out and delete all its contents. Some users prefer to keep the -save_backups folder to avoid losing saves.
  2. After that, go to the directory where the game is installed, usually Steam\steamapps\common\Dying Light The Beast\engine\source\bin\x64\ShaderCompilers. Delete all files in this directory; they will be recreated on the next launch.

After completing these steps, it is recommended to verify the integrity of the game files. To do this, open the properties of Dying Light: The Beast in Steam, go to the "Installed Files" tab, and run the integrity check. The client will automatically restore any missing or corrupted components.

Additional driver cache cleanup steps:

  1. For NVIDIA users, the necessary files are located at C:\Users\user_name\AppData\LocalLow\NVIDIA\PerDriverVersion\DXCache.
  2. For AMD graphics card owners, a similar folder is located at C:\Users\user_name\AppData\LocalLow\AMD\PerDriverVersion\DXCache.

Deleting the contents of these folders will allow the video driver to recreate the current cache and eliminate possible conflicts.

If crashes persist

Sometimes the game may launch successfully but crash after a few minutes or when starting a new session. In such cases, switching the graphics API helps. Try changing from DirectX 12 to DirectX 11 through the game's advanced graphics settings. This reduces system load and eliminates compatibility errors with some driver versions. If you do not have access to the game (the application does not launch), open the properties of Dying Light: The Beast in Steam and in the "Launch Options" tab, enter -dx11 (or -dx12) and save the changes.

If the problem remains, it is recommended to describe your case in detail — this will help other players suggest solutions. If you have found your own way to fix the crashes, share it in the comments under this guide.

Bug during escape from psychiatric hospital

During the story mission involving the escape from the psychiatric ward in Dying Light: The Beast, players may encounter a critical bug that completely blocks the progression of the mission. The problem occurs at the stage where you need to use the severed finger to activate the exit button.

If you accidentally close the door leading from the previous room before this action, it will no longer open. As a result, the player becomes trapped and cannot leave the area. This becomes especially critical after the character's death: upon respawning, the keycard doors remain locked, and when trying to open them, a message appears stating that you do not have the keycard. In this case, it is impossible to complete the mission. Some players have been forced to use developer mode to bypass this bug.

How to fix the error

After dying, you respawn in front of the entrance to the infirmary. Before entering the medicine room and the scene with the hand again, return to the corridor and try to open the same door that previously would not open. At this point, it should open correctly. After that, you can continue the mission — use the hand on the lock and proceed with the escape as intended by the script.

Note: Players also report that the keycard and electronic door bug may occur not only in this mission but in other parts of the game as well.

Bug in the "Don't Look Back in Anger" quest

While completing the "Don't Look Back in Anger" quest, some players encounter a bug that makes it impossible to continue the story. The error occurs after the character's death at the stage where you need to descend into the basement and obtain the gallbladder. If the hero dies after opening the door, and then the player exits the game and launches it again, upon re-entry the door appears slightly open but does not respond to interaction. As a result, access to the infected is blocked, and it becomes impossible to complete the quest.

How to fix the problem

The solution to this error turned out to be quite simple. After re-entering the game, you need to reach the nearest safe zone and use the bed to skip time — for example, sleep through one in-game day. After this, return to the basement: the door should open, allowing you to continue the quest without issues.

The game does not save graphics settings

Some players report that Dying Light: The Beast resets graphics settings every time it launches, forcing them to reconfigure image quality, resolution, and effects. This issue is most often related to restrictions on writing the game's configuration files.

To fix the issue with graphics settings not saving, follow these steps:

  1. Find the files responsible for saving settings — they are usually located in the \Documents\Dying Light the Beast folder or in the main game directory.
  2. Right-click the required file or folder and select "Properties."
  3. Make sure the "Read-only" attribute is not set.
  4. If the box is checked, uncheck it, click "Apply" and "OK".
  5. Restart the game and set your desired graphics settings again.

After this, the settings should be saved correctly for subsequent launches. The settings should remain consistent between sessions.

Fixing Dying Light: The Beast crashes on AMD graphics cards

Some AMD graphics card owners encounter an issue where Dying Light: The Beast crashes during cutscenes. The system log often shows a message about a graphics driver timeout. One player contacted AMD support and received a step-by-step guide that helped completely resolve the crashes.

To disable the AMD Crash Defense service, follow these steps:

  1. Press Win+R to open the Run window.
  2. Type msconfig and press Enter.
  3. In the window that opens, go to the Services tab.
  4. Find AMD Crash Defense in the list.
  5. Uncheck it to disable the service.
  6. Click Apply, then OK.
  7. Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

This action prevents the driver's protection mechanism from interfering, which may mistakenly interpret the game's load as a critical error and cause crashes.

Next, it is recommended to check Windows system files. Open Command Prompt or PowerShell as administrator (right-click the icon and select Run as administrator), then enter the command:

sfc /scannow

After the scan is complete, restart your computer so the system can automatically fix any found errors.

The final step is reinstalling AMD drivers. Support recommends uninstalling the existing drivers and the AMD Adrenalin utility, then installing the latest stable version — 25.8.1. However, the user noted that simply downloading and installing the current driver manually over the old one was sufficient.
