How to Find and Unlock the Map in Of Ash and Steel — Complete Guide

Of Ash and Steel invites you to venture to a distant island, tormented by terrible monsters and ruthless marauders. The young man from the capital, Tristan, must make a long journey from an inexperienced survivor to a seasoned fighter. In this guide, we’ll tell you how to get the Greyschaft map and where to find all the places to sketch the atlas.
When You Can Get the Map
The world map is not available at the start of the game. In the beginning, you will only have a compass in the top right corner of the screen. To navigate the area, you’ll have to memorize all the locations and the roads between them.
Of Ash and Steel is a classic RPG with no mini-map or icons above characters. Accordingly, nothing is displayed on the world map except for location names and a scheme of the island with roads. You will also have the opportunity to make your own marks, such as: Ruins, Treasures, Monsters, Caves, Characters.
Nevertheless, having an open map greatly simplifies traveling. Although in reality, you will still have to learn the locations of all the passages between biomes, taverns, trainers, and merchants.
To get the map, Tristan must, during the story quest The Return at the beginning of the second chapter, come to the shore from the starting quest. There, the hero will find his cartographer’s toolkit, which will allow him to draw the island’s atlas. But before that, you will need to go through a relatively long path.
- Complete the prologue in Nerest’s hut.
- Reach the city of Greyschaft.
- Find the Guiding Chapel navigation office in the port.
- Finish the quest The Long Road Home, at the end of which you’ll have to survive an assassination attempt, then talk to Irwin.
- Complete the first quest for either the Order of the Seven or the Free Hunters faction.
- Find Irwin and start the quest The Return.
Now that Tristan has received the map, he still needs to draw it, because at first it will be covered by the fog of war. Filling the atlas works as follows. The hero finds a place in the location with a white drawing on the ground and sketches a piece of the island. Usually, this is an elevation from which you can see most of the level.
You will only get a hint for the Campsite biome. For the other locations, you’ll have to look for the spots where Tristan can draw the map yourself. We’ve found them for you. But first, let’s briefly explain how to get the cartographer’s kit.
How to Join the Order of the Seven
After your first meeting with Irwin, head to the fortress of the Order of the Seven. The fort is located in the southeastern part of the city. Here’s a simple route from the main city gates.
- Head north.
- Go around the tavern on the right side.
- Pass through the city archway.
- Turn right and go up to the next archway.
- Go down the stairs and at the end go right, then follow towards the shore until you see a large castle adorned with red flags.
Talk to Gabriel at the entrance, then to Commander Godrank, who will assign you to find four knights: Beltran, Melt, Dalar, Chad. The quest will be challenging, so we’ll describe it in detail in another guide. Here, we’ll briefly explain where to find them and what needs to be done.
- Chad. He is in the bushes near the green glowing mushrooms. The nook is located not far from the main gates between the alchemy shop and the city tavern. You need to find the order's attire for him. First, go to the fields near the suburb to Viola, then to the Free Hunters’ headquarters to Selma, and return to the knight. Then go down to the port, enter the last building on the right, closest to the shore. Deal with the enraged husband, take the key from Joanna, open the chest with the armor, and return it to Chad.
- Melt. Go to the tavern by the watchtower at the campsite and pay the innkeeper 100 coins.
- Beltran. Find or buy at the city market behind the tavern a piece of iron ore, a steel ingot, and a Azure Night wine bottle. Visit the Greyschaft Hound inn southeast of the suburb and talk to the knight. Head east and look for a tent town (Expedition) on the left side of the road—the first settlement you’ll encounter. Help Cyril restore the forge. Bring him the bellows wheel, anvil, and his hammer. Deliver the materials and give Beltran the sword.
- Dalar. From the Hound inn, go east to the fishing village. Enter the house at the very top by the rocky cliff. Return to Gabriel, then finish the quest by talking to Godrank, after which he will send you to Irwin.
How to Join the Free Hunters
The Free Hunters’ headquarters is located in the eastern part of the island. Here’s a brief description of one of the easiest and most accessible ways to get there.
- The path starts at the Greyschaft port.
- Follow the bridge to reach the hilly lands.
- Climb up to the windmills, heading south.
- Enter the Free Farms biome.
- Continue south to the river.
- Turn left on the path and follow it to the wooden fortress adorned with green flags.
Enter the hut at the very top and talk to Kurt to get your first quest for joining the guild. You must bring him five bad pelts from fangbeast carcasses. Note that for this you need the Carcass Skinning skill. You can purchase it from the hunter sitting by the bridge at the beginning of the suburb. You can find the beasts on the roads of Greyschaft.
In the next quest, you need to pass a trial from three Falcons, who will give the hero feathers. A detailed guide on joining the Free Hunters will be published on our website a bit later. Here we provide a brief walkthrough of the quest.
- Amalticus. The Ice Petal grows at the bottom of the lake located near the nearest village with a windmill.
- Morgus. Climb the brick tower standing to the south not far from the headquarters, and tear off a piece of the banner.
- Kamal. Choose one of the four envelopes. Inside will be a verse with a riddle. Following the clue, find a unique animal, kill it, and bring the trophy to the hunter. For example, the tailless fangbeast from the moon envelope is in a cave located between the wooden watchtower and the western windmill.
Collect all three feathers and bring them to Kurt. Then go down to the giant tree by the cave and touch it. After your initiation into the Free Hunters, talk to the leader, who will send the hero to Irwin.
How to Find Irwin
Irwin’s hut is located in the Fishing Village area. First, you need to reach the bridge connecting the western and eastern parts of the island. Now head to the cemetery. Go around it on the right side and you’ll see a path leading up to the ranger’s hut. There you’ll find the intelligent hobster Magvo in the barn, who will tell you that the owner has gone to visit the king’s relative.
Now head to the tower at the campsite in front of the suburb, to the tent tavern named after the king’s brother, where you’ll find Irwin.
How to Complete the Quest The Return
Tell Irwin about the situation with the letter for the head of the Order of the Seven. Now follow him. When he stops, go along the path into the grotto and at the turn go right. This will bring you to the shore where Tristan’s squad was destroyed at the start of the game. Kill all the monsters, go to the left bank, and pick up the cartographer’s kit, then go into the cave and kill the decayed one.
Return to Irwin and tell him about your discovery. He will give a hint about where to look for the spot to sketch the map in this area. From this moment, you have the atlas, on which Tristan will recreate all of Greyschaft. In the following sections, we will walk you through how to find all the points for creating the island map.
How to Unlock Campsite
Reach the tavern by the watchtower. Now head toward Nerest’s Cabin to the wooden bridge. To the right of the crossing is a path. Follow it and climb the hill on the right. At the end of the trail, you’ll see a small camp and a log leading to the shipwreck. Prepare for a fight, as there are about a dozen bandits here with a strong leader. Approach the wreck and climb onto the bow.
How to Unlock Nerest's Cabin
Stand in front of the notice board in the suburb. Turn left from it and go straight, without turning anywhere, until you reach the lumberjack camp. Turn left before it and look for the white drawing on the cobblestone of the ruined bridge, which offers a view of the abandoned village.
How to Unlock Outskirts
If you are coming from the Campsite, reach the statue and follow the path to the right. Before the Greyschaft Hound tavern, there is a fork. Choose the path leading uphill. Climb up to the red brick fort, where you’ll see the sign on the porch.
How to Unlock Grayshaft
From the main city gates, head north and climb up to the entrance to the upper city. To sketch the area, stand right on the flowerbed.
How to Unlock Alpha and Omega
Leave Grayshaft via the bridge located between the port and the slums. Follow the rocky road straight to the third windmill. Go around it and you’ll find a boulder with a drawing.
How to Unlock The Free Hunters
Reach the Free Hunters’ headquarters. In front of it, turn right and follow the path straight. This way, you’ll end up in front of the brick tower. Climb to the very top to sketch the area.
How to Unlock Fishing Village
Enter the Fishing Village location. Approach the stone bridge on the west side of the island. Head south along the road toward the cemetery. Climb up to the watchtower and get on top of it.
How to Unlock Swamp Village
Enter the Darkwood from the Fishing Village side. Go straight and go around the brick ruins on the left. Follow the trail ahead until you find the ranger camp. Approach the southern watchtower and you’ll see a white symbol on the ground.
How to Unlock Ivarsby Village
Enter the location from the Darkwood (Swamp Village) side. On the right side from the start of the level, there is a path with spiders. Follow it uphill until you reach a blocked stone tower, where you'll find the sign on a wooden platform. Note that the camp in the ruins is inhabited by bandits.
How to Unlock Frozen Valley
Enter the location through the northern passage from the Free Hunters’ territory. Follow the path ahead, take the first turn right, and climb the stone tower. Keep in mind this is a high-level region, and the ruins are guarded by more than a dozen cursed marauders.
How to Unlock Greashaft Mines
The mines are located south of the cemetery in the Fishing Village area. You will gain access to this level about halfway through the story, after meeting the king in the upper city. The viewpoint is located next to the entrance. To find it, approach the goose-neck crane on the left.
