Heartopia Fishing Guide — How to Unlock Fishing, Get a Rod, Catch Fish, and Use Bait

Heartopia is a cozy life simulator where you can spend your time cooking at your own pace or designing your personal garden. You’ll also complete tasks for the townsfolk to unlock new recipes, furniture, and clothing. In this guide, we’ll explain how to unlock fishing and get your first fishing rod. You’ll also learn where to find fish and how to use bait.
How to Unlock Fishing in Heartopia
Fishing isn’t available right away. To unlock it, you need to complete a tutorial from Vanya. He’ll visit you the day after you finish setting up your home, following Bob’s advice. Vanya will give your character a fishing rod, then ask you to head to the nearest pond and catch three fish. Return to him to complete the quest.
After this, “Fishing” will appear in the “My Hobbies” section. To level up this skill, visit different bodies of water and catch new types of fish. From now on, you’ll have a fishing rod in your inventory. You can also buy aquariums and bait from Vanya.
How to Catch Fish
Fishing in this game is very straightforward. To catch a fish, just find a dark shadow in the water, take out your rod, cast it, wait for a bite, and reel it in. However, there are a few details to keep in mind:
- Go to a body of water with fish.
- Open your tool menu by pressing (T) or clicking the toolbox icon in the bottom right corner.
- Select the fishing rod, and your character will equip it.
- A white circle with a fish icon will appear on the water, showing where your bobber will land.
- Press F to cast your line, or click the round fishing rod icon.
- If you hold your cursor over the rod icon, a green oval will appear. This lets you move the marker to adjust where the bobber will land.
- Cast the bobber near the fish and wait for a bite.
- Reel in the line by pressing F or clicking the rod icon.
- If the line starts turning red, stop reeling and wait for it to turn white again. Otherwise, the fish will break the line and disappear.
Remember, the fishing rod is just like any other tool and needs regular repairs. Use a portable Repair Kit, which you can craft at the workbench from five Branches.
Where to Find Fish
The map features plenty of rivers and lakes, as well as four access points to different seas around the island’s perimeter. Fish spawn randomly, and you can always spot them underwater as dark blue silhouettes. If you cast your line into a body of water and nothing happens after a while, try moving to a different spot.
It’s important to know that sea fish won’t appear in lakes or rivers, and freshwater fish won’t show up in the sea. Weather and time of day also affect what you can catch. Some fish are available at any time and in any weather, while others only appear in the morning or when it’s raining.
How to Attract Fish
Vanya’s Fishing Store sells several items that can help with fish spawns:
- Bait: 200 coins. Sprinkle it into the water to attract fish;
- Mermaid Fish Attractor: 2,000 coins or one Wishing Star. Unlocks at fishing level four. Place the statue by the shore and wait for the fish to come;
- Mermaid Perfume: 4,000 coins or two Wishing Stars. Unlocks at fishing level six. Spray it on yourself and fish will appear.
To fully max out your fishing hobby, you’ll need to catch all 94 types of fish at least once. You can sell your catch to the traveling merchant, Albert Jr.
