Windrose Gunpowder Guide — Where to Find Sulfur and Ash

Vladyslav Shamshurov

To fire weapons in Windrose, you'll need to craft both ammo and gunpowder. Ammo can be made almost right away, but gunpowder only becomes available in Act 2, after you reach the Foothills area. In this guide, we'll break down where to find sulfur and how to craft makeshift gunpowder.

Where to Find Sulfur

Unlike most resources, sulfur in Windrose doesn't have specific marked locations. Head to the Foothills islands and look for tall stone boulders. You’ll find sulfur directly on them as breakable yellow-green veins.

You can also build a natural resource trader in your camp and order sulfur from them. You can buy this trader from the "Tortuga Residents" faction once you reach reputation level two.

Ash is left over in the charcoal kiln after turning wood into coal. By the time you reach Act 2, you'll usually have enough of this resource, so you rarely need to farm it separately.

How to Craft Makeshift Gunpowder

After defeating the first boss, you'll be able to upgrade production buildings and construct new ones. One of these is the mill. You can use the mill to make corn flour, ash, and makeshift gunpowder. To build a mill, you'll first need to craft mill parts, which are made at the starting workbench from 15 pieces of stone.

Once you find sulfur for the first time, the makeshift gunpowder recipe unlocks automatically. To craft 15 units of gunpowder, you'll need 10 units of sulfur and 20 units of ash.

Where Else to Find Makeshift Gunpowder

You can also get makeshift gunpowder from ranged enemies. Fight musket-wielding humans—they often drop ammo and a bit of gunpowder. These enemies are most common in the second biome. The third biome mostly has natives and crocodiles, but that's where you’ll find better firearms. So, it's best to save your makeshift gunpowder until you get your hands on good weapons.
