Subnautica 2 Leviathans Guide: All Locations and How to Scan Them

Vladyslav Shamshurov

Leviathans in Subnautica 2 are massive sea creatures that live in dangerous zones, guard rare resources, and can block the path to new biomes. You cannot kill them, so it is better to know in advance where they appear, how to escape them, and what you need to scan them safely. In this guide, we cover all Leviathans currently available in the game, where to find them, and which rewards you can get for studying them.

List of Leviathans in Subnautica 2

At the moment, the following creatures can be encountered in Subnautica 2 Early Access:

  • Collector Leviathan.
  • Shiver Leviathan.
  • Gulper Oyster.
  • Deepwing Brooder.
  • World Tree.

Some of these creatures are aggressive and will attack the player, while others are mainly needed for resources, scanning, or learning more about the game's lore.

Collector Leviathan

At the moment, the Collector Leviathan is the easiest Leviathan to find: you only need to reach the third biome. It patrols the entire area and usually stays at a depth of around 100 to 200 meters, away from the seafloor and player-made structures. Visually, the creature resembles a giant octopus. The Leviathan is quite aggressive: if it notices artificial light, combat music will start playing, and it will try to attack.

To survive, try to move toward coral formations and hide among them. To scan the Collector Leviathan, you will need the upgraded Bioscanner and any vehicle. Approach the creature and wait until it grabs your vehicle, then get out and calmly finish the scan. As a reward, you will unlock the active Sonic Echo Biomod, which helps you search for resource deposits. In a separate guide, we have already explained how Biomods work in Subnautica 2.

Shiver Leviathan

The Shiver Leviathan is a huge aggressive creature that patrols the Early Access boundary. If you cross the red barrier, Shiver Leviathans will appear immediately and chase the player until they return to the available game area.

There are no rewards for scanning the Shiver Leviathan, but doing so will unlock an additional databank entry. To study the creature safely, leave the playable area with the passive Camouflage Biomod equipped. If you stay still, the monsters will not notice the player and will swim past, giving you enough time to complete the scan. The databank notes that, on this planet, the Shiver Leviathan is the closest creature to humans in evolutionary terms.

Gulper Oyster

The Gulper Oyster is located in the southern part of the world, roughly 300 meters from the lifepod in the 195-degree direction. It is a massive shell with valuable resources inside, including lithium, scrap, and a Portable Oxygen Generator. If you touch the stretched threads, the shell will start closing and try to digest the trapped prey.

The oyster is located near the border with the second biome, so you will need a Rebreather to study it: without one, your oxygen will run out too quickly. You can scan the creature from any position, and no extra preparation is required.

Deepwing Brooder

The Deepwing Brooder is a neutral Leviathan that can be encountered in any biome. It slowly moves through the upper layers of the water and drops eggs, a rare resource needed to cook Pavlova. Since the creature freely moves between biomes, finding it on purpose can be difficult.

World Tree

The World Tree is classified as a Titan-class Leviathan, but in Early Access it feels more like a decorative object and a visual symbol of the game than an active creature. You can reach it, but the easiest way to do so is in Creative Mode. The World Tree is located roughly two kilometers from the lifepod.

Leviathans from previous Subnautica games do not appear here: Subnautica 2 takes place on a different planet with its own unique wildlife. In future updates, the developers plan to expand the lore, add new locations, introduce new creatures, and include more ways to interact with dangerous fauna.
