DragonSword: Awakening Best Team Compositions and Hero Combos
DragonSword: Awakening stands out because you control several characters and can switch between them during combat. Since the game lets you collect every hero, sooner or later the question becomes obvious: who should you put in your main party? In this guide, we will cover the best character pairings, strong teams, and the principles you should follow when building a lineup.
How to Build Teams in DragonSword: Awakening
Every character in DragonSword: Awakening has their own abilities, which grow stronger as they level up and improve their Karma. Many skills are built around specific effects: Poison, Burn, Frostbite, Bleed, Stun, Airborne, or Shock.
That is why, when building a team, you need to look not only at a hero's personal damage, but also at their role within the combo. One character can apply the required status, another can extend the control effect, and the third can deal the main damage to a prepared target.
Poison Combo: Johnny and Charlotte
This is a classic initiator plus finisher pairing. Johnny is responsible for constantly applying Poison: thanks to his high mobility, he can quickly close the distance and keep the debuff active on the target. Charlotte, on the other hand, shines specifically against poisoned enemies. Her explosive abilities reach their full potential only when Poison is applied consistently. Without Johnny's support, Charlotte's damage drops noticeably, so this pair is best used together.
Fire and Burn: Aria, Kalien, and Kalsion
This team is built around a clear sequence of actions. Aria opens the fight: she sets the enemy on fire and launches them into the air at the same time, creating a window for a combo. Kalien picks up the initiative: her clones help quickly build Burn stacks, after which you can perform a powerful attack with Stun. Kalsion closes the chain: he deals the main damage, but is especially effective against burning and airborne targets. To strengthen this synergy, the Burning Flame set works well for the whole team.
Ice and Frostbite: Othello, Cerese, and Dana
Cerese provides crowd control: she is effective at freezing groups of enemies, but performs worse in boss fights because of her long animations. Othello makes up for this weakness as the main damage dealer: to deal high damage, he needs the target to be afflicted with Frostbite quickly. Dana fills the role of a universal support: she applies Ice, distracts enemies with her Familiar, and protects the team with shields.
Bleed and Stun: Roxy, Theresia, and Astria
Roxy applies Bleed quickly, but to fully convert her damage, she needs stunned targets. That makes her partners a natural fit. Theresia combines strong Bleed damage with her own powerful Stun, making her a self-sufficient damage dealer. Astria sacrifices mobility for damage: her attack chains stun enemies and pierce their armor, but she needs a high crit chance to realize her full potential.
Wind and Airborne: Renia and Eileen
Renia specializes in extended combos against enemies launched into the air, so she works well with characters who can reliably send opponents airborne. Aria is one of her best partners. Eileen strengthens the team with attack speed buffs and can deal high critical damage herself. Her gear can be tuned for a specific lineup: stronger support, personal damage, or extra team bonuses.
Lightning and Shock: Ornette
Ornette performs best in teams built around Shock and depends heavily on the right gear. The Thunder Rush set should be one of her first options. If you do not have dedicated Electro supports such as Sion or Tarte in the lineup, Ornette can be supported by Lute: his attack buffs help maintain high damage even without direct Electro synergy.
Lute: A Universal Support for Different Teams
Lute is one of the game's two healers alongside Tarte. Thanks to his first Awakening, he gives the whole team an attack bonus and fits well into lineups that frequently use Stun. Two pieces of the Holy Arbiter set provide reliable healing, while Ruin Destroyer helps compensate for the character's personal damage.
Best Teams for Combat, Bosses, and Exploration
Below, we have collected three ready-made lineups that can be used without rebuilding your team for every activity. Some teams are better suited for control and high damage, while others are more comfortable for stable story progression and world exploration.
Theresia, Renia, and Castella
This lineup focuses on aerial attack chains, steady Bleed, and constant control. Theresia takes the role of the main damage dealer: her flexible stance system lets her switch between applying Bleed and stunning enemies depending on the situation, while her signature ability, Divine Arc, deals high damage to targets.
Castella supports Theresia's damage by frequently stunning enemies and opening a window for long combos. Renia controls the battlefield: she launches enemies into the air and prevents them from quickly getting back into the fight. Thanks to its mix of damage, Bleed, and control, this party is well suited for difficult battles and high-level content.
Theresia, Roxy, and Lute
This is a balanced team for players who want to focus on Bleed without sacrificing survivability. Theresia serves as the main damage source, combining Bleed with Stun through attack chains.
While the enemy is immobilized, Roxy maintains Bleed stacks with regular attacks, then uses special skills for extra damage when the effect is at its peak. In this lineup, Lute acts as a flexible support: he enters the field to stun enemies, strengthens the team, and heals allies in longer fights.
Alex, Aria, and Roxy
This is a starter team, but it remains completely viable: all three characters are available early in the game. Despite its low entry requirement, the party offers a good balance of roles and can carry the player through a large part of the story without an urgent need to replace heroes.
Alex holds the frontline: he breaks enemy armor, knocks opponents down, and acts as the team's tank. Aria supports the party with beams of light and applies Shock, weakening enemy resistance to damage. Roxy fills the role of the main source of steady damage and regularly inflicts Bleed on enemies.
***
When choosing a team, do not try to level every hero at once. First, build one main lineup of three characters, check which effects they apply, and upgrade the skills that support the overall combo. If your damage starts to fall off, the problem is usually not one weak hero, but the fact that the team is not making good use of statuses, control, and Karma.
