Best Builds in The Witcher 3 Remastered: Skills and Progression
The The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered update launched on September 29 and brought the biggest overhaul of the game's RPG systems in its history. The skill tree was not simply rebalanced. It was rebuilt from the ground up into a proper branching tree, where advanced skills are unlocked through prerequisite nodes instead of by spending a certain number of points anywhere in a branch. Every skill now has three ranks, values and synergies have been recalculated, and some abilities were renamed to better match their effects.
The update is free for existing owners, but there is one important catch: if you continue an old save, all your skill points will be reset. This is a direct result of the redesigned progression system, so you'll need to redistribute everything from scratch. Old tried-and-tested builds now work differently after the rebalance. Some became weaker, while others are finally viable. Below, we'll break down the best builds in The Witcher 3 Remastered after the overhaul.
What Changed in Character Progression
Before putting a build together, it helps to understand the new rules. We covered all changes and improvements in The Witcher 3 Remastered in a separate guide.
New Progression Rules
- Unlocking a skill requires the previous node in its branch. The old rule of spending a certain number of points anywhere in the branch is gone.
- Every skill has three ranks, and upgrading a skill you already own can sometimes be more valuable than unlocking a new one.
- Every point invested in a branch grants a passive bonus. Combat gives +1% Adrenaline gain, Signs grant +0.5% Stamina regeneration in combat, Alchemy gives +2% potion duration and bomb damage, and General gives +1% Vitality.
- All Witcher School Techniques, including Cat, Wolf, Bear, Griffin, Manticore, and Viper, are available from the first point invested instead of being scattered throughout progression.
- Mutagens, color matching between skills and mutagens, and the mutations from Blood and Wine are still present and remain a major part of a build's endgame power.
Hybrid builds are now noticeably cheaper in terms of skill points, while the standout skills from the upper tiers are easier to reach. That said, spreading points across every branch is still a bad idea. The passive bonuses for invested points reward focusing on one or two main directions.
General Tips Before You Start
- Collect every Place of Power. Resetting your skills does not remove the points earned from them, and free points are more valuable in the new system.
- The Potion of Clearance, sold by Keira Metz and later by a druid on Skellige, still resets your allocated points, so mistakes in the new tree are easy to fix.
- Synergy from the General tree is almost mandatory in any late-game build. Each rank increases the bonuses from mutagens placed in mutagen slots.
- Transmog, available through Reforging at master craftsmen Yoana and Hattori, lets you wear the best armor while using the appearance of the set you actually like.
Feline School Master Build
A straightforward, reliable, and easy-to-understand option for a main playthrough. Fast Attacks reach high killing speed early, Feline School gear is found along routes that overlap naturally with the main story, and the build is more forgiving in combat than most alternatives.
Core Skills
- Cat School Techniques 3/3. Each piece of light armor increases critical hit damage and boosts Fast Attack damage.
- Muscle Memory 3/3. After a successful dodge or roll, the next three consecutive Fast Attacks deal 30% more damage.
- Three Strikes 3/3. Every third Fast or Strong Attack has a 60% chance to empower the next attacks of the same type.
- Whirl 3/3. A spinning attack that hits every enemy around Geralt. Essential against tightly packed groups of drowners and ghouls.
- Fleet Footed 3/3. Reduces damage taken while dodging.
- Razor Focus 3/3. Grants 1 Adrenaline Point at the start of combat and increases Adrenaline generation.
- Resolve 3/3. Reduces Adrenaline loss when taking damage.
- Battle Frenzy 3/3. Each available Adrenaline Point increases critical hit chance.
- Undying 3/3. When Vitality reaches zero, consumes Adrenaline to revive Geralt. It has an internal cooldown, so treat it as insurance rather than something to rely on constantly.
- Synergy 3/3 and Refreshment 3/3. A strong general-purpose combination for mutagen bonuses and healing from potions.
Gear and Alchemy
Use the full Feline School set with red mutagens in your slots. Keep Swallow and Thunderbolt ready, along with Katakan Decoction for critical hit chance and Nightwraith Decoction for increased Vitality after kills. Euphoria is the best mutation for this setup: at high Toxicity, critical hits can reach absurd damage values. Maribor Forest speeds up Adrenaline generation and lets Battle Frenzy come online almost immediately.
The main weakness is that the build does very little to improve Signs. If you want Geralt to feel more like a mage, check out the Griffin build below.
Ursine School Master Build
This is the opposite extreme: Strong Attacks, heavy armor, and a huge Vitality pool. The build starts more slowly than Feline, but by the middle of the game it can absorb hits that a light-armor setup simply cannot survive.
Core Skills
- Bear School Techniques 3/3. Each piece of heavy armor increases maximum Vitality and Strong Attack damage.
- Strength Training 3/3. Fast Attacks increase the damage of your next Strong Attack, so alternating between Fast and Strong Attacks becomes part of the build rather than an optional trick.
- Crushing Blow 3/3. A Strong Attack has a 60% chance to increase the damage of the next two Strong Attacks by 50%.
- Rend 3/3. A powerful attack that ignores enemy defenses and scales with Adrenaline. This is your primary tool against bosses.
- Sunder Armor 3/3. Strong Attacks reduce the target's damage resistance.
- Counterattack 3/3. After a successful parry or dodge, your next attack deals more damage, while crossbow damage is doubled.
- Deadly Precision 3/3. Attacks can make your next Strong Attack instantly kill the target. Against immune enemies, the effect instead grants 0.3 Adrenaline.
- Undying 3/3 and Sun and Stars. Extra survivability and regeneration.
- Synergy 3/3 and Refreshment 3/3.
Gear and Alchemy
Use the Ursine School set with red and green mutagens. The key piece is Archgriffin Decoction: when you have Stamina available, a Strong Attack consumes it and removes an additional portion of the enemy's current Vitality, which is especially useful against durable targets. Euphoria works well as the mutation, while Bloodbath is a good alternative for players who enjoy finishing blows. Among the new General skills, Gourmand is useful for long-lasting food regeneration, while Element of Surprise grants bonus melee damage after hitting an enemy with a bomb.
The build is honest about its weaknesses: you move more slowly, have worse crowd control, and depend on Strong Attack timing. In exchange, it forgives almost everything else.
Griffin School Master Build
Sign builds used to be somewhat temperamental because Sign Intensity struggled to compete with raw sword damage. After the Sign synergy overhaul and the relocation of several General bonuses closer to the root of the tree, Griffin has become a fully viable combat powerhouse.
Core Skills
- Griffin School Techniques 3/3. Each piece of medium armor increases Sign Intensity and Stamina regeneration.
- Fire Stream 3/3. Igni's alternate mode becomes a continuous stream of fire, and at rank 3 its Stamina cost is reduced by 50%.
- Melt Armor 3/3. Igni damage also weakens enemy armor and increases the chance to inflict Burn.
- Sustained Glyphs 3/3, Supercharged Glyphs 3/3, and Magic Trap 3/3. Yrden slows enemies, deals damage, and intercepts projectiles.
- Catalyst 3/3. Aard and Igni deal significantly more damage to enemies inside Yrden.
- Chain Reaction 3/3. The more different Signs you alternate between, the stronger each subsequent cast becomes.
- Focus 3/3. Adrenaline increases Sign Intensity.
- Exploding Shield or Active Shield 3/3. Choose whichever Quen upgrade you prefer.
- Anger Management 3/3. Signs consume Adrenaline when Stamina is depleted.
Gear and Alchemy
Use the Griffin School set with blue mutagens. Tawny Owl and Ancient Leshen Decoction solve most Stamina regeneration problems, while Petri's Philter increases Sign Intensity. The best mutation is Magic Sensibilities, which gives Signs a chance to critically hit. Near the bottom of the Sign tree, aim for Resonance. After casting a Sign, your next three melee attacks deal additional damage, which helps solve the caster build's biggest weakness: close-range combat.
Manticore School Master Build
Alchemy comes online earlier than before. The opening branches of the tree immediately offer Refreshment, Efficiency, and Frenzy, while Manticore School Techniques no longer requires a long progression path. A decoction-and-bomb setup is the most durable build of the group.
Core Skills
- Manticore School Techniques 3/3. Each piece of medium armor increases sword and bomb damage.
- Refreshment 3/3. Every potion dose restores Vitality. With the new Alchemy branch passives, potion effects also last longer than before.
- Acquired Tolerance 3/3. Every known alchemy recipe increases maximum Toxicity.
- Tissue Transmutation 3/3. Decoctions increase maximum Vitality.
- Fast Metabolism 3/3. Toxicity decreases faster, allowing you to drink more potions during combat.
- Delayed Recovery 3/3. While Toxicity is above 0%, each consumed potion extends active potion effects by 5 seconds, up to their maximum duration.
- Side Effects 3/3. Drinking a potion has a chance to trigger an additional random potion effect for free.
- Cluster Bombs 3/3 and Volatile Compound 3/3. Your primary source of area damage.
- Poison Blades 3/3. Oils applied to blades give attacks a chance to poison enemies.
- Metabolic Control and Synergy 3/3 from the General tree.
Gear and Alchemy
Use the Manticore School set from Blood and Wine. During a normal playthrough, wear any medium armor until you reach Toussaint. Slot green mutagens. Run three decoctions at once: Nightwraith, Katakan, and Archgriffin. The mutation is Euphoria. It is weaker than it used to be after the rebalance, but it remains the Alchemy build's main source of damage scaling. Among the new skills, Toxic Shock is especially useful: a Strong Attack against a poisoned target consumes the poison and deals additional damage, making it an excellent match for Poison Blades.
The only real downside is the routine. You need to find recipes, gather ingredients, and refresh your decoctions before major fights. In return, Geralt becomes extremely difficult to kill even on Death March! difficulty.
Wolven School Master Build
The Wolf School benefits more than any other from the new system. Its medium-armor technique improves both weapons and Signs, while the General tree offers several skills that directly connect Adrenaline with magic.
Core Skills
- Wolf School Techniques 3/3. Medium armor increases both weapon damage and Sign Intensity.
- Muscle Memory 3/3 and Precise Blows 3/3. The foundation of your sword damage.
- Flood of Anger 3/3. Three Adrenaline Points cast a Sign at its highest level and add a large Sign Intensity bonus.
- Anger Management 3/3. Signs can consume Adrenaline when you have no Stamina.
- Adrenaline Burst 3/3. Signs themselves generate Adrenaline.
- Attack Is the Best Defense 3/3. Successful defensive actions grant Adrenaline.
- Far-Reaching Aard and Shockwave 3/3. Your crowd-control tools.
- Rend 3/3. A finisher for tougher targets.
The core of the build is a self-sustaining loop: parries and dodges generate Adrenaline, Adrenaline empowers Signs, and Signs generate more Adrenaline. Use the medium Wolven School set with an even split of red and blue mutagens. This is the most traditionally witcher-like build of the group. It does not dominate any single category, but it can do everything.
***
The new tree rewards commitment. With three ranks per skill and passive bonuses for invested points, it is usually better to finish upgrading what you already have instead of spreading points too thin. If you want the simplest option, go with Feline: Fast Attacks, light armor, critical hits, and a very smooth combat flow. If you prefer heavier combat, choose Ursine with Archgriffin Decoction. For Signs, Griffin finally hits hard enough to feel genuinely powerful. For perfectionists, Manticore offers almost bottomless survivability.
And remember: the Potion of Clearance is cheap, and experimenting with the new system is half the fun. Good luck on the Path, witchers!
