«Mortal Kombat Fans Were On Their Feet Applauding» — MK2 Screenwriter Reveals First Reactions to Upcoming Sequel

Jeremy Slater, the screenwriter known for his work on Fantastic Four, The Umbrella Academy, and Moon Knight, has opened up about the highly anticipated Mortal Kombat 2 movie, which is set to hit theaters on October 24, 2025.
According to Slater, the sequel will be funnier and more epic in scale compared to the first film. While the core cast and storyline will remain, the second installment will introduce new characters and, most importantly, deliver the actual tournament that fans were promised in the original movie.
Slater emphasized that he wanted the film to be dynamic and engaging, with no dull moments between fights. With around twenty characters making an appearance, the team worked hard to ensure that every key moment — from battles and fatalities to surprises — would be as impactful and satisfying for fans as possible.
Filming wrapped up in early 2024, though production faced delays due to the actors' strike. Fan reactions during test screenings have been overwhelmingly positive, with audiences laughing, cheering, and getting genuinely excited.
I am so excited for people to see the movie. It's been done for a while. We've been waiting for the right release date and waiting for the right window. I have been to those test screenings, which are full of Mortal Kombat fans, and watching them react to it the way I reacted to Avengers: Endgame. They were cheering and jumping out of their seats. Every joke is landing and they are loving it. It's one of the greatest moments of my life. That's why you get into this business. They had the best stunt team in the business working on this thing. The actors are phenomenal. It's so much funnier and bigger than the first movie.
Simon McQuoid returns as director for the sequel, while Slater notes that Mortal Kombat is a unique franchise that allows for telling new stories with fresh characters.
