Director of New Resident Evil Movie Reveals Which Game Inspired the Film

Zach Cregger, the director behind the upcoming Resident Evil film adaptation, has recently shared which entry in the iconic game series the movie will most closely resemble.

While there’s no official trailer yet, Cregger opened up about his approach to the adaptation. He explained that the film’s story is designed to give viewers the feeling of being immersed in the game itself. Audiences will follow the main character as he descends deeper and deeper into hell, mirroring the player’s experience in the games.

Cregger emphasized that he’s played a lot of Resident Evil himself, so he understands the franchise’s pacing and cinematic style. The movie will feature an original storyline and will be on a much larger scale than any of his previous works.

Although the film’s events are set during the timeline of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, Cregger said the tone will be closer to Resident Evil 4. He added that the Resident Evil series is known for its varied settings and atmosphere, and his film will maintain that diversity, keeping things fresh and bold.

Filming is scheduled to begin in mid-October in Prague and will continue through January 2026. The location was chosen for its budget incentives and access to a skilled crew and resources. The director promises the film will be very cool.

According to insider Daniel Richtman, the protagonist will be a courier named Brian, played by Austin Abrams.

The story follows Brian as he delivers an organ to Raccoon City’s hospital, but after hitting a mysterious woman on the road, he quickly finds himself caught in a nightmare filled with mutated monsters and biological horrors.

Meanwhile, the game Resident Evil Requiem is currently in development and is set to release on February 27, 2026, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. You can find more details here.
