One of the producers behind the upcoming BioShock film has just confirmed a key detail about the highly anticipated adaptation — the movie will be based on the first entry in the iconic game series.

Netflix is currently developing the adaptation of Irrational Games and 2K Games’ beloved franchise, with The Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence at the helm.

While fans already knew the movie would be set in the BioShock universe, there was no guarantee the adaptation would directly follow the plot of any specific game. Many speculated it might tell an original story inspired by the series’ core themes. However, producer Roy Lee has now put those rumors to rest.

Netflix wants us to keep everything under wraps. But it's definitely going to be based on the first 'BioShock' game...

He also shared an update on the production schedule.

Well, The Long Walk became a reality because BioShock was delayed for a little bit where we had to do some more script work. And so as the script work is being done, we shot The Long Walk, and he was already committed to doing the next Hunger Games movie. And so it's just waiting for him whenever the Hunger Games is completed, and the script is just being worked on right now.

Filming for the new Hunger Games spinoff is currently underway in Spain, with a premiere set for November 2026. Work on BioShock is expected to begin after that.

The original BioShock was released in 2007 on Xbox 360 and PC, later making its way to PS3 and even iOS. The game follows Jack, who, after a plane crash, discovers the underwater city of Rapture and its dark secrets. The franchise also includes BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinite, both of which received mostly positive reviews from gamers.

There’s still no information about casting or a release date for the movie, but it’s confirmed to be coming to Netflix. The screenplay is being written by Michael Green, known for his work on Logan, Alien: Covenant, and Blade Runner 2049.

As for the next game, BioShock 4, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick promised in August that the company is committed to making it happen. However, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier later reported that the project has been delayed indefinitely, with developer Cloud Chamber losing a third of its staff.
