Amazon Studios has begun active preparation for its upcoming God of War adaptation — and judging by new casting rumors, we’re not just getting a big-budget production, but a brutal and explicit take on the iconic game. The information comes from popular insider Daniel Richtman.
According to Richtman, casting directors are currently searching for actors for several key roles, including Kratos himself. As usual, the characters are listed under fake names in the official documents — but the descriptions leave little doubt as to who’s who. Moreover, much of the information suggests the story will be based on Ragnarok.
The main character, codenamed Zion, is described as a man aged 40–60 — a battle-hardened warrior, covered in scars and burdened by loss. After the death of his wife, he raises his 10-year-old son, though he remains emotionally distant and haunted by his past. The role requires intense physicality, hand-to-hand combat, and possible nudity — a typical checklist for Kratos.
The boy, Joshua (clearly Atreus), is 9–12 years old — intelligent, curious, and emotionally neglected, striving to earn his father’s approval. The part includes physical combat and weapons training.
Among the secondary characters are Alexander — a manipulative patriarch obsessed with prophecies (an obvious nod to Odin), Glen — handsome, calculating, and jealous of his brothers (possibly Thor), and Phoebe — a woman trying to hold her family together amid her husband’s destructive tendencies and her father-in-law’s schemes.
The listing also emphasizes that the series will carry an adult TV-MA rating, with a tone and level of explicitness comparable to Game of Thrones and Spartacus.
Filming for God of War is reportedly set to begin in 2026 in Vancouver, Canada. The show will focus not only on large-scale battles, but also on Kratos’s past and his complex relationship with his son. Recently, a potential shortlist of actors for the God of War himself also surfaced online.
