Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’: Filming Details, New Stills, and Posters
Empire magazine has published the first images and details of Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film — an adaptation inspired by the ancient Greek epic The Odyssey. The director describes the project as “the most fundamental and physically demanding” of his career. The premiere is set for July 17, 2026.
The lead role will be played by Matt Damon as Odysseus, returning home after the Trojan War. According to Nolan, the story “contains everything — from tragedy and myth to the human search for meaning.” Filming lasted 91 days and spanned locations across Europe, from Italy to Scotland. It’s also the first film to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras.
We shot more than two million feet of film, most of it on the real sea. It was primal, wild, and genuinely dangerous. I wanted the actors to feel the same forces Odysseus faced. The world resists you — and that’s where the truth of the story is born. We went out with the actors into real waves, real places. It’s immense and terrifying, wonderful and merciful, when conditions change constantly. We wanted to show how hard such great journeys were for people — and the leap of faith they made into an unknown, unexplored world.
The cast also includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal. Emma Thomas once again serves as producer.
The Odyssey will be Nolan’s thirteenth film and his first exploration of ancient mythology. Universal Pictures promises “an epic that combines practical filmmaking, the real sea, and the scale of IMAX into one monumental adventure.”
