Christopher Nolan Will Bring Myths to Life in 'The Odyssey' Using Animatronics

In Nolan's new film The Odyssey, full-size mechanical creatures will appear, including the Cyclops Polyphemus. As reported by World of Reel, scenes with him were filmed in Greece, in the legendary Cave of Nestor and on Voidokilia Beach, where a six-meter anthropomorphic animatronic was installed.

According to sources, the mechanics were worked on by practical effects specialist Adam Wright (Frankenweenie, Corpse Bride, Fantastic Mr. Fox). His participation indicates that the film will use many realistic creatures — from Scylla to sirens — made by hand rather than with CGI.

Nolan is known for his love of practical effects: in Oppenheimer he even recreated a nuclear explosion without computer graphics. In The Odyssey, the director aims to achieve a material presence of mythological creatures so actors can interact with them directly.

The cast includes Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong'o, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page, and John Leguizamo.

The film's premiere will take place on July 17, 2026, in theaters and IMAX.
