Jon Bernthal Promises a “Seamless” Transition Between Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Punisher

Frank Castle, played by Jon Bernthal, is finally heading to the big screen — and not just anywhere, but in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, where he’ll cross paths with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. Nearly ten years have passed since Bernthal’s debut in Netflix’s Daredevil, and now the antihero is not only entering the MCU in full, but will also receive his own Disney+ special shortly after the film’s release.

The main question fans have: how different will Castle be in a relatively family-friendly Spider-Man movie versus his much darker solo story? According to Bernthal — not at all. His Punisher will remain a unified character, with no “softened” version for a younger audience.

Around the same time, a special Punisher project will also drop — and it will feature the most hardcore Frank Castle you’ve ever seen. For me, for director Destin Daniel Cretton, and for Tom, the priority was simple: that the Punisher could walk off the Spider-Man set and immediately step onto the set of the special. And I truly believe we’ve achieved that.

This kind of “straight-through continuity” has happened before in the MCU: Spider-Man crossed paths with Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Murdock later appeared in She-Hulk. The character remained consistent even as the tone and format shifted.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton — known for staging large-scale, inventive sequences in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings — only increases expectations. The meeting between Spidey and the Punisher promises plenty of kinetic action and difficult confrontations for both heroes. Filming, by the way, has already wrapped.
