‘They Didn’t Understand What Made the First Film Special’: Russell Crowe Slams ‘Gladiator 2’

Russell Crowe said in an interview with Triple J that he believes Gladiator 2 lacks the key element that defined the success of Ridley Scott’s original. The actor argues that the creators of the sequel misunderstood the foundation of the first film.

I think the recent sequel — which, you know, we don’t even have to say out loud — is a very sad example of how even the people in the “engine room” didn’t actually understand what made the first film special. It wasn’t the grandeur. It wasn’t the pageantry. It wasn’t the action. It was the moral core.

One of the most controversial decisions for Crowe was the interpretation of Paul Mescal’s character. In Gladiator 2, it is stated that Lucius is the illegitimate son of Maximus — a detail absent from the original story. Crowe said that such a move contradicts the logic of the first film.

He also questioned the storyline suggesting a romance between Maximus and Lucilla, played by Connie Nielsen. The actor recalled that during the filming of the first movie, he had to defend the integrity of his character to ensure that script suggestions didn’t contradict Maximus’s internal principles.

During filming, there was a daily struggle to preserve the character’s moral core. The number of times we were asked to add sex scenes for Maximus… It’s like you’re taking his strength away. You want to say that at the same time he had a relationship with his wife, he also slept with another woman? What are you even talking about? It’s madness.

Despite the criticism and unflattering comparisons to the original, Gladiator 2 grossed $462 million worldwide and received solid audience scores. Viewers praised the visuals and the performances of Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington, but criticized the overall message, the disregard for the legacy of the first film, and the fact that it felt like “popcorn cinema.” According to reports, Ridley Scott is already working on a third film.
