‘I Cried at the Ending’: Hideo Kojima on the Animated Film He Expected Nothing From
Japanese game designer Hideo Kojima shared his impressions after watching the animated film KPop Demon Hunters. The creator of Death Stranding and Metal Gear admitted that he turned the movie on completely by chance — and ended up deeply moved.
According to Kojima, he had no particular expectations for the project, but the story quickly pulled him in.
I randomly started watching KPop Demon Hunters, got completely hooked — and ended up crying at the end. It was incredibly good.
KPop Demon Hunters premiered on Netflix on June 20 and has become one of the most notable animated hits of 2025. According to the platform, the film amassed more than 300 million views in its first three months, making it the most-watched movie in the service’s history. Following the project’s success, Sony Pictures is already working on a sequel.
The story follows the members of the music group Huntrix, who for many years have protected the human world from demons through their singing. Things spiral out of control when their fans begin to be lured away by a mysterious male group.
Earlier, Kojima also shared his impressions of the third Avatar film, praising its visuals and comparing it to his own recent work.
