“I’m Ready Right Now”: 75-Year-Old Ron Perlman Wants to Return as Hellboy to Finish the Trilogy

Ron Perlman hasn’t given up hope of completing the Hellboy story he began with Guillermo del Toro more than twenty years ago. In an interview on the Joe Vulpis podcast, the actor said he is ready to return to the role of the horn-sawed demon even at 75 — if only to finally make the third film that never happened.

The actor emphasized that the original story was conceived as a trilogy from the very beginning, and that key character arcs were left unresolved. A full script for the third installment was likely never written, as the “creative side” moved on to other projects. However, del Toro reportedly had a clear vision for the ending, which was meant to be a large-scale epic.

The first two films — Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army — were released in 2004 and 2008, respectively. After the planned threequel was shelved, the franchise was rebooted twice: in 2019 with David Harbour, and again in 2024 with Jack Kesy in Hellboy: The Crooked Man. Both attempts were poorly received by critics and audiences alike, only strengthening nostalgia for Perlman’s original incarnation.

Earlier, Leonardo DiCaprio said that, in his view, movie theaters are destined to become an extremely niche form of entertainment.
