“The Biggest Streaming Event in History”: Warner Bros. Promises a Record-Breaking Launch for the Harry Potter Series

The Harry Potter series from HBO Max will become “the biggest streaming event in the history of the service — and possibly in the history of streaming as a whole.” This was stated by Warner Bros. Discovery’s global streaming and gaming chief J.B. Perrette while speaking in London at an event dedicated to the launch of HBO Max in the UK and Ireland.

“The Biggest Streaming Event in History”: Warner Bros. Promises a Record-Breaking Launch for the Harry Potter Series
This will be the biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max and possibly in the history of streaming overall. In many ways, it’s the number one, number two, and number three event.
— J.B. Perrette

According to Perrette, the scale and level of detail of the show will be “theatrical on another level.” He pointed to producer David Heyman and separately noted that the serialized format allows the creators to “go deeper” and show things that simply didn’t fit into two-hour films. He also called the project “the streaming event of the decade,” adding that HBO and HBO Max content chief Casey Bloys isn’t particularly fond of such phrasing.

The series will re-adapt J.K. Rowling’s book saga as a multi-season drama and is scheduled to premiere in 2027. Harry Potter will be played by Dominic McLaughlin, Ron Weasley by Alastair Stout, and Hermione Granger by Arabella Stanton. Actors confirmed for major roles also include John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, and Nick Frost.

Perrette also separately reminded audiences that HBO Max is launching in the UK and Ireland on March 26, 2026, noting that the company has long been waiting for the chance to properly enter the market. Against that backdrop, the new Harry Potter is clearly seen inside Warner Bros. as a key trump card — and, judging by the statements, one they plan to sell as a true “number one” streaming event.

Earlier, one of the actors revealed that the series will show things that were not present in the books in order to deepen the everyday lives of the characters — for example, exploring the social environment in which Draco Malfoy grows up.

Do you believe this level of hype — can a Harry Potter series really become the biggest event in streaming, or is this just standard marketing years before the premiere?
