“Like the Quality Noir Films of My Childhood”: Hideo Kojima Praises ‘Crime 101’
Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear, Death Stranding) has watched the crime thriller Crime 101 and shared his thoughts on social media. The legendary game director called the film “excellent” and “deeply satisfying.”
Kojima highlighted the film’s balance between action, drama, character work, and atmosphere. He said it reminded him of the high-quality noir thrillers he loved as a child.
It’s not about justice or good versus evil, nor about law or ethics. Instead, a sense of “love” for the characters and their almost chivalrous code of honor quietly and satisfyingly comes to the forefront in the final moments.
Kojima compared director Bart Layton’s work to films by Michael Mann, noting the same focus on characters rather than excessive violence or high-speed chases. He also praised the performances — especially Nick Nolte’s.
Crime 101 is based on the novella by Don Winslow about a jewel thief operating along California’s Highway 101. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Halle Berry, and Barry Keoghan.
Have you seen ‘Crime 101’? Do you agree with Kojima’s take — or did the film disappoint you?
