Sony Announces First Venom Animated Movie After Live-Action Trilogy

The Venom franchise is taking a bold new direction, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Sony Pictures is preparing the first animated film featuring Marvel's popular anti-hero.

Directors of the project will be Zach Lipovsky (Zach Lipovsky) and Adam B. Stein (Adam B. Stein) — the duo behind the horror hit Final Destination: Bloodlines. The film not only revived the franchise after 14 years but became its highest-grossing and best-reviewed installment.

The movie is in early development. No writer has been assigned yet — Sony Pictures Animation is forming a writers' room to define the concept and direction of the future film.

Producing will likely be handled by Amy Pascal (Amy Pascal), Avi Arad (Avi Arad), and Matt Tolmach (Matt Tolmach) — the team behind the live-action Venom movies. Details are still being finalized. Tom Hardy (Tom Hardy) may also be involved in the project. It's unclear whether he'll serve as producer or return to voice Venom after three films playing Eddie Brock.

The first Venom (2018) grossed an impressive $856 million worldwide. However, sequels Venom 2 (2021) and Venom 3: The Last Dance (2024) showed declines both in box office and reception.

The shift to animation could be an attempt to refresh the character. Sony already has successful experience in this area — the Spider-Verse animated films, created with Phil Lord (Phil Lord) and Christopher Miller (Christopher Miller), brought commercial success and an Oscar.

Venom himself debuted in comics in 1988 in The Amazing Spider-Man #300, created by writer Bill Michelinie (Bill Michelinie) and artist Todd McFarlane (Todd McFarlane). Over time, the character became one of Spider-Man's most recognizable antagonists and got his own series.

No exact release date is known yet: the script isn't written, and animation production is a lengthy process.
