Insider: Animated Venom Movie Targeting R-Rating

Sony Pictures is reportedly moving forward with an animated Venom feature, and according to insider Daniel Richtman, the project is targeting an R-rating.

The R-rating would allow directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein (Final Destination: Bloodlines) to fully lean into Venom’s horror roots, delivering a level of brutality that fans felt was missing from the live-action trilogy. Tom Hardy, who officially bid farewell to Eddie Brock in Venom: The Last Dance, is also attached to the project. However, it remains unclear whether he will return to voice the anti-hero or serve strictly as a producer.

Releasing an R-rated animated film in theaters is often seen as a gamble, but the massive success of shows like Invincible and Rick and Morty proves there is a huge appetite for adult-oriented content. For Sony, this is a chance to reboot Venom’s story and course-correct after the mixed reception of the previous films. The project is currently in early production.
