“I’m Absolutely Against It”: Cillian Murphy Shuts Down Rumors About Joining HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’

HBO’s Harry Potter series is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated projects of 2027. The cast is nearly complete, filming is underway, and Hans Zimmer is composing the score — but one key role officially remains a mystery.
Speculation surrounding the casting of the series’ main villain has been circulating for months. In January, Ralph Fiennes — who portrayed Voldemort in the original films — appeared to let something slip on the red carpet. He said the role was “already taken” and described Cillian Murphy as a “very, very good choice.” Realizing what he had said, he quickly added with a laugh: “You caught me.” HBO offered no comment.
I’m absolutely against it. You can put that in the headline.
With Voldemort still unconfirmed, the rest of the cast has largely fallen into place. Newcomer Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry, chosen from 32,000 candidates. Arabella Stanton — who previously voiced the character in the audiobook — will portray Hermione, while Alastair Stout has been cast as Ron.
Among the adult cast: John Lithgow will play Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu will portray Snape, Janet McTeer takes on McGonagall, and Nick Frost steps into the role of Hagrid. The only returning actor from the original film series is Warwick Davis, reprising his role as Professor Flitwick. The score is being composed by Hans Zimmer.
The series is set to premiere in early 2027, with seven seasons planned — one for each book. J.K. Rowling is serving as a consultant on the project.
