The budget of the film Project Hail Mary starring Ryan Gosling turned out to be much higher than originally expected. Even with the tax benefits, the film will go down in history as one of the most expensive in Hollywood.

Apparently, the total budget of the film was approximately $248 million. Project Hail Mary was filmed in the UK, where tax benefits apply. Thus, the total cost will be approximately $200 million.

Such a budget is comparable to the cost of an expensive blockbuster movie. Moreover, the new film will be Hollywood's most expensive non-franchise sci-fi project since Christopher Nolan's Tenet.

Project Hail Mary has been called an extremely risky idea before. However, at that time it was believed that the film's budget was approximately $150 million. Now, the film must raise approximately $500 million and enter the top 10 highest-grossing films of the year in order to become a hit.

Ryan Gosling has only two films that have surpassed the half-million box office mark — Barbie ($1.4 billion) and La La Land ($522 million).

The plot of Project Hail Mary was built around the character of Ryan Gosling, a physics teacher who woke up on a spaceship many light-years from home, not remembering how he got here. He soon realized that he had to apply his scientific knowledge to save the Earth from extinction.

The film will be released on March 20, 2026. Earlier, the authors published a trailer in which they showed an alien creature who flew in to save his dying star. Ryan Gosling's character learned to communicate with him through a special device.
