Sony Delays New Jumanji Film — Now Set to Release After Avengers and Dune
Sony Pictures has shifted the release date of the third installment in the popular Jumanji adventure franchise. The new film, starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, is now scheduled to hit theaters on December 25, 2026, instead of its previously planned December 11 debut.
This move puts Jumanji right in the middle of one of the year’s most crowded release windows. Just one week before the new Jumanji hits theaters, audiences will see two major blockbusters—Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three—both set for release on December 18. Industry insiders have already dubbed this showdown “Dunesday,” hinting at the fierce competition for moviegoers’ attention.
The rescheduling could be a strategic win for Sony: the Christmas period is traditionally a strong window for family and adventure movies. Both previous installments—Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level—were released during the holidays and went on to gross over $800–900 million worldwide.
The new chapter will once again reunite the familiar cast, with Jack Black, Karen Gillan, Danny DeVito, and Nick Jonas all returning to their roles. They’ll be joined by new cast members, including Dan Hildebrand and Jack Jewkes.
Jake Kasdan, who helmed the previous two films, is back in the director’s chair and also co-wrote the script with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. The film’s producers include Matt Tolmach, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia.
The modern Jumanji franchise follows a group of teenagers who get sucked into a video game and must survive as in-game characters. Given the huge success of the previous movies, the upcoming film has every chance to further cement the series’ popularity—even with such tough competition during the holiday season.
Sony first revealed a look at the new Jumanji film back in November. Recently, Dwayne Johnson also appeared in the trailer for the upcoming Moana movie.
