Death Stranding 2 and Deadpool 2 Star Shiori Kutsuna Joins Live-Action Gundam Movie
The cast of the upcoming film adaptation of the iconic Gundam anime franchise continues to grow, with Shiori Kutsuna — known to gamers for her role as Rainy in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach — joining the Netflix and Legendary Entertainment project.
Kutsuna is also recognized for playing Yukio in the comic book films Deadpool 2 and the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine. She’ll star alongside Sydney Sweeney, Noah Centineo, and Michael Mando. Details about her role, as well as the film’s plot, remain under wraps.
This project marks the first-ever live-action feature adaptation of Gundam — one of the most influential sci-fi franchises in anime history. The original Mobile Suit Gundam series, created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, pioneered the “mecha” genre with its focus on giant combat robots, and has since grown into a global media powerhouse generating over $600 million annually.
Jim Mickle is set to direct and has also penned the script. The film is being produced by Nightshade Studios in collaboration with Bandai Namco Filmworks, the rights holder for the franchise.
Filming is scheduled to begin this April in Australia. Jason Clarke was previously attached to the project, but recent reports indicate he is no longer part of the cast.
For Shiori Kutsuna, joining Gundam is another step in her expanding international career. The film’s release date has yet to be announced.
