Glen Powell Will Appear in Super Mario: The Galaxy Movie in an Unexpected Role

The cast of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has received another surprising addition. Glen Powell, known for Top Gun: Maverick and Twisters, will voice Fox McCloud — the protagonist of the Star Fox series. Powell shared a video on his Instagram with the caption: “Born to do a barrel roll.”

Fox’s appearance in the film is a major surprise in itself. McCloud is not a character from the Mario universe and had previously crossed paths with Mario only in the Super Smash Bros fighting games. Earlier, legendary Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who helped create Mario, Zelda, and Donkey Kong, said that Nintendo generally does not like characters crossing over between franchises. Apparently, an exception was made for McCloud.

Star Fox is a Nintendo series of rail shooters and arcade flight games. Every entry in the franchise is set in the fictional Lylat system and follows a team of mercenary pilots led by the fox Fox McCloud. Despite its cult status and large fanbase, new games in the series are rare: the most recent one to date, Star Fox 2, was released in 2017.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will hit international theaters on April 1, 2026. Actors from the first film will reprise their roles: Chris Pratt will once again voice Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy will return as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Jack Black as Bowser. Joining the cast are Brie Larson as Rosalina, Donald Glover as Yoshi, and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.
