Amazon wants the Mass Effect series rewritten for “non-gamers”
The Mass Effect series adaptation is having trouble. According to The Ankler, Amazon MGM Studios’ new head, Peter Friedlander, has demanded that the script be reworked so the adaptation becomes “more appealing to people who do not play video games.” At the same time, journalists report that the series is “on the verge of a greenlight,” and filming could begin very soon.
On the one hand, such a demand from Amazon’s leadership is concerning: it is easy to see it as an attempt to strip Mass Effect of its uniqueness and identity, turning the franchise into a standard, toothless space sci-fi story. On the other hand, Amazon already has experience with a successful adaptation of a gaming universe. The Fallout series managed to tell a new story aimed at the broadest possible audience. At the same time, thanks to its careful treatment of the world, factions, and lore, fans of the game series were satisfied as well.
The last news about the Mass Effect series appeared in November 2025. Franchise executive producer Mike Gamble stated that the show would tell an original story set after the events of Commander Shepard’s original trilogy. At the same time, the events of the series will become part of the official Mass Effect canon.
We are working closely with Amazon, and we are excited about the story the talented writing team has come up with. We have already figured out how the series fits into the Mass Effect canon and where it stands in relation to the events of the games. The show will tell a completely new story set after the original trilogy. It will not be a retelling of Commander Shepard’s story — because, after all… this is YOUR story, isn’t it?
The showrunner of the Mass Effect adaptation will be Doug Jung, the screenwriter of Star Trek Beyond and Mindhunter. The story is being handled by F9 writer Daniel Casey. Gamble, former Marvel Studios producer Avi Arad, and Karim Zreik will serve as executive producers of the show.
The next entry in the series — Mass Effect 5 — was first announced in 2020 with a teaser featuring the return of Liara T’Soni. However, the project remains in pre-production. On N7 Day in November 2025, executive producer Mike Gamble confirmed that development is continuing and that BioWare is now fully focused on the project. The studio has also been opening new job positions, which only reinforces the idea that the release is still a long way off. No official date has been announced — and industry estimates suggest a launch before 2030 is unlikely.
Do you think a Mass Effect series should be made first and foremost for fans of the franchise?
