Denis Villeneuve isn’t dragging it out: the final Dune will be shorter than both previous films

The runtime for Dune: Part Three has surfaced unexpectedly — via AMC and Regal listings, where IMAX tickets appeared for early sale.

The final chapter of Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy will run for 2 hours and 20 minutes, making it the shortest entry in the series: Part One was 2 hours 35 minutes, while Part Two clocked in at 2 hours 46 minutes.

It’s a surprising move, considering the third film adapts not only Dune Messiah but also incorporates elements of Children of Dune — meaning Villeneuve had even more material to work with than in the previous installments. However, the director has repeatedly stated that he wanted the finale to have “a different pace, a different rhythm” — more driven and less contemplative. Judging by the runtime, he’s sticking to that vision.

Dune: Part Three takes place 12 years after the events of the second film: Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, is now Emperor, and his holy war has spread across the galaxy. Returning cast members include Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jason Momoa, and Rebecca Ferguson. A major new addition is Robert Pattinson as Scytale — a shapeshifting villain from the Bene Tleilax.

The film premieres on December 18, 2026, and will face direct box office competition from Avengers: Doomsday on the same day. A new teaser was recently released to coincide with ticket sales — it was revealed earlier. Notably, Steven Spielberg also shared his admiration for Villeneuve’s work — and called Dune one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time.
