Netflix and Sony Are Making Their Own Wonka — And It’s Nothing Like the Original

Netflix is working on a brand-new animated take on Roald Dahl’s classic tale, titled Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory, set to premiere in 2027. The project is billed as a modern reimagining of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” but with a radically different world, characters, and overall tone.

The story is now set in contemporary London, with familiar elements getting a fresh twist. The main character is Charlie Paley — a brand-new protagonist voiced by Kit Connor. Willy Wonka will be voiced by Taika Waititi, who is also serving as an executive producer.

The film is directed by Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan, with Aron Warner and Timothy Yoo among the producers. Visuals are being handled by Sony Pictures Imageworks, the studio known for projects like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and “K-Pop: Demon Hunters.”

This new version takes a sharp turn from the whimsical fairy tale, leaning into a more satirical and modern tone. According to the synopsis, Willy Wonka ends up in prison after a failed experiment turns a child into a blueberry. After serving his sentence, he returns to the factory, trying to rebuild his life and bring more “sweetness” into the world. But he faces a new generation of teenagers — including Charlie and his friends — who are plotting to break into the factory, steal a valuable chocolate bar, and save their families from eviction. Their plan quickly collides with the chaotic and dangerous reality of Wonka’s factory.

The project is shaping up to be one of Netflix’s most unusual animated releases in recent years: it blends Dahl’s classic material with a darker, more modern, and slightly absurd interpretation. Sony Pictures Imageworks’ involvement hints at top-tier visuals and a bold, experimental animation style.

All in all, it looks like Netflix is aiming for a radical retelling rather than a straight adaptation — with a new protagonist and a shifted moral core, focusing on generational conflict and a sharper, satirical take on the beloved story.
