Paramount Revives World War Z — Sequel Gets Surprise Green Light After Years in Development Hell

Paramount Pictures has officially confirmed that a sequel to World War Z is in the works. The announcement came during CinemaCon 2026, where the studio also laid out its future plans for major franchises, including new installments for Top Gun, Star Trek, G.I. Joe, and Transformers. No details about the plot, cast, or release window have been revealed yet.
The original World War Z hit theaters in 2013 and quickly became one of the most notable zombie movies of its era. Brad Pitt starred as Gerry Lane, a former UN investigator racing to find the source of a global zombie pandemic and stop its spread. Unlike classic zombie horror, the film focused on a worldwide catastrophe and the rapid collapse of civilization, with a more accessible rating and fast-paced action.
One of the film’s standout features was its depiction of “fast” zombies and its globe-trotting narrative, shifting the action from country to country to show how different nations responded to the outbreak. Despite a troubled production and numerous script rewrites, World War Z was a commercial hit, grossing over half a billion dollars worldwide on a budget of $190–269 million.
Attempts to get a sequel off the ground have been made several times over the years, but the project languished in development hell, with directors and concepts changing—including a period when David Fincher was attached—before the film was ultimately put on hold.
For now, the new World War Z remains a project shrouded in mystery, but its official confirmation after such a long hiatus is already making waves among fans of the franchise.
Meanwhile, over 1,000 Hollywood stars have come out against the Paramount and Warner Bros deal announced in February.
