Media: Elden Ring film adaptation budget is far above $100 million

It seems that, despite A24’s reputation as a studio known for niche arthouse films, the film adaptation of Elden Ring will be a full-fledged blockbuster. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie’s budget will significantly exceed $100 million, making it the most expensive project in A24’s history. For comparison, the studio’s previous record belonged to the comedy Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet, which was estimated to have a budget of $60–70 million.

Principal photography is expected to last around 100 days. Production began in the UK in spring 2026, with a theatrical release—including IMAX—scheduled for March 3, 2028.

The film is directed by Alex Garland, known for Ex Machina, Annihilation, Civil War, and Dredd, who also wrote the screenplay. Garland is an experienced gamer and a big fan of the source material—he not only loves the game but has completed it multiple times.

To secure the rights to adapt his favorite game, Garland called A24’s film division head Noah Sacco several years ago and passionately described his experience with the game. He then invited Sacco over, launched Elden Ring on PlayStation, and asked if he would be interested in adapting it. The game’s world reminded the executive of The Lord of the Rings, and he agreed. After receiving approval, Garland began working on a draft screenplay, eventually expanding it to 160 pages. He and Sacco then traveled to Japan, where they met with Hidetaka Miyazaki and representatives of Bandai Namco to finalize the deal.

The game’s creators—Hidetaka Miyazaki and writer George R. R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire, who developed the mythology of Elden Ring—are involved as producers and consultants to ensure fidelity to the source material. Martin has already called A24 a “cool studio” and Garland a “first-rate director.”

The cast includes Kit Connor, Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, and Nick Offerman.
