Mario Creator Explains Why Nintendo Avoided Movies for 30 Years — and Whether the Galaxy Movie Twist Will Become Canon (Spoilers!)

In an interview with Nintendo Dream Web, Shigeru Miyamoto answered a question that has been on fans’ minds since the premiere of The Super Mario: Galaxy Movie: will the film’s major reveal become official canon for the series?

Spoiler: yes. The film reveals that Peach and Rosalina are sisters who were separated in childhood. This is something Miyamoto wants to establish in future games.

But first — why did Nintendo avoid film adaptations for so long?

Before The Super Mario: Galaxy Movie, Peach intentionally had no official backstory. Now that it exists, Miyamoto says he’s interested in expanding the character further.

Miyamoto also commented on criticism. He called the negative reception to the first Mario movie “understandable,” since the studio was just starting with animation. But regarding the backlash to The Super Mario: Galaxy Movie, he says he disagrees with it.

The Super Mario: Galaxy Movie has topped the U.S. box office for three consecutive weeks. Combined, the two Mario films have surpassed $2 billion in global revenue. Moreover, the adaptation now ranks third among the highest-grossing video game adaptations.
