Far Cry Without Far Cry? The Showrunner Behind Ubisoft’s Iconic Franchise Explains His Controversial Decision
Noah Hawley, best known for his work on Fargo and Legion, has revealed the first details about the upcoming Far Cry adaptation he’s developing for FX and Disney. The project won’t be a direct adaptation of any existing game in the franchise—instead, it’s set to forge its own path.
According to Hawley, the series is being conceived as an anthology: each season will feature a standalone story with a new cast and a unique setting. This approach is inspired by the games themselves, where every installment tells a self-contained narrative, united only by the core concept—a person thrust into an extreme, hostile environment, gradually losing their familiar moral compass.
The showrunner emphasized that he deliberately chose not to bring specific game plots to the screen. Instead, he aims to “have a dialogue with the franchise” and offer his own vision of what a Far Cry-inspired story can be. In his view, the classic video game structure—where narrative often takes a back seat to gameplay and is broken up by cutscenes—doesn’t translate well to dramatic television.
Production is expected to kick off in earnest in 2026, right after filming begins on the second season of Hawley’s other major project, Alien: Earth. He also noted that he plans to personally direct the first episodes of Far Cry before handing off some responsibilities to his team, including co-showrunners, so he can work on multiple projects in parallel.
In other words, the upcoming Far Cry series won’t be a traditional adaptation, but rather a fresh reimagining of the franchise’s core ideas—focusing on psychology, moral choices, and human transformation in the face of extreme violence.
By the way, back in January it was reported that the Far Cry spin-off, Maverick, is currently on hold as Ubisoft continues to search for new ideas. Last year, we also covered a fan-made AI-generated trailer for a Far Cry 3 adaptation featuring Vaas Montenegro.
What do you think—did Noah Hawley make the right call by steering away from directly adapting the Far Cry games in favor of an anthology with new stories each season, or would you have preferred to see a faithful adaptation of a specific entry, like Far Cry 3?
