Universal unexpectedly moves “The Mummy 4” forward by almost a year — and picks the perfect month for it

“The Mummy 4” starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz will now release on October 15, 2027 — seven months earlier than originally planned. The film was initially set for May 19, 2028, but Universal Pictures has reshuffled its release schedule and moved the project forward.

October is an obvious choice for a mummy-themed movie: the Halloween season traditionally favors monsters and adventure films. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from Radio Silence — known for the Scream reboot — previously described the script as “beautiful, scary, and grand.” It was written by David Coggeshall, who worked on the horror film Orphan: First Kill.

Filming is set to begin in August 2026 in London and Morocco. With the new release date, that gives the team around 16 months from the start of production to premiere — a tight but realistic schedule for a major studio blockbuster.

Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz will return as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell for the first time since 2001’s The Mummy Returns. The 2008 third installment is being ignored: Rachel Weisz did not appear in it, and the role of Evelyn was played by another actress. John Hannah is also set to return as Jonathan.

The May 19, 2028 slot will now be taken by “Miami Vice,” starring Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler.
