Casper the Friendly Ghost Live-Action Series Heading to Disney+

A new live-action series centered on Casper the Friendly Ghost is coming to Disney+. Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston have been tapped as showrunners and writers for the upcoming project.

Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who produced the original 1995 feature film, is set to return as executive producer. The series is described as a modern reimagining of the classic ghost story, with reports suggesting a darker, more grounded tone. Notably, this Disney+ iteration is a completely different concept from the project previously in development at Peacock.

As the show is still in the early stages of development, a release date has not yet been set.

Created by Seymour Reit and Joe Oriolo, Casper became a household name thanks to the 1995 live-action hit Casper, which spawned sequels such as Casper: A Spirited Beginning and Casper Meets Wendy, as well as two animated features. Gamers may also remember the friendly ghost from titles like Casper (1996), Casper: Spirit Dimensions (2001), Casper and the Ghostly Trio (2006), and Casper's Scare School (2008).

In other streaming news, Netflix recently announced a second season for Stranger Things: Tales From '85. This follows the reveal of a new series focusing on the world's first costumed superhero.
