The Battlefield film adaptation has, true to its name, become a “battlefield” for Hollywood’s biggest studios. According to TheWrap, Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, Amazon MGM Studios, Sony, and Universal are fighting for the film rights.

This level of interest from studios is hardly surprising: video game adaptations are currently enjoying a new boom, while Battlefield is back in the spotlight following the success of Battlefield 6. The new entry in the series became one of the best-selling games of 2025 and the most successful title in franchise history.

However, the main reason for all the attention around the Battlefield adaptation is its creative team. Christopher McQuarrie, director of the latest Mission: Impossible films, will write the screenplay and direct the movie himself. The film will be produced by Michael B. Jordan — star of Black Panther, the Creed franchise, and winner of the 2026 Oscar for Sinners. He is also believed to be playing the lead role in the film. The adaptation rights are expected to be very expensive.

Notably, Battlefield will also have to compete with Call of Duty in theaters. A film based on that franchise is being developed by Paramount together with director Peter Berg. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on June 30, 2028.

Do you think Battlefield has a chance to become a full-fledged military blockbuster, rather than just “another video game movie”?
