Gears of War Producer Says the Film Should Expand the Game Lore, Not Retell It
The Gears of War film is still in very early development, and producer Kelly McCormick says the adaptation should build on the franchise's world rather than simply retell the games' story. She added that the screenplay is moving forward and that the movie does not yet have a release date.
McCormick said the team is excited about the project and making progress on the script. She said the aim of video game adaptations should be to add to the game's story and lore instead of repeating it.
The producer described the film and the games as part of a shared ecosystem. In her words, the movie feeds into the next game, and the game feeds into the next movie, so audiences can experience both and feel more connected to each side of the franchise.
The movie contributes to the next game, and the game contributes to the next movie. And they have a bit of an ecosystem where you can experience both of them and feel more connected to the game, but also feel more connected to the movie.
Back in June, the film was described as a Delta Squad origin story. It is being developed by Netflix with David Leitch directing and John Spaihts writing the screenplay. The upcoming game Gears of War: E-Day is set to launch on October 6, 2026.
How do you feel about adaptations that expand game lore instead of retelling the original story?
