Sony Builds a New Mascot Line With Nemu the Night Owl Bear, a Sleep-Deprived Rival to Hello Kitty
Sony Creative Products is betting on Nemu the Night Owl Bear as a potential mascot face for the company, hoping the sleepless bear character can do for Sony what Mario and Sonic did for Nintendo and Sega. The character is one of the company's early contenders as Sony looks for an original IP that can stand on its own and eventually challenge Hello Kitty.
The larger goal is even more ambitious: Sony Creative Products wants to build characters with universal appeal that can generate 10 billion yen in annual sales by 2030. To reach that figure, the company has already formed a dedicated team to develop potential hit characters and opened a special event space in Tokyo.
Nemu is built around a specific kind of anxiety. The bear cannot sleep because he worries about life and world problems, and Sony says that theme is part of why the character has caught on. Within a year, Nemu passed 100,000 followers on social media, though some reports say the figure is now above 1 million.
Sony says merchandise and an anime adaptation featuring Nemu are already in development. A Sony Creative Products executive also said that the character's stress-filled theme is resonating across borders, with the idea reportedly landing especially well outside Japan.
The company is still far from its target, though. In Japan, a character is usually considered a hit if its merchandise brings in 2 to 3 billion yen a year, so Sony's 10 billion-yen goal is a much higher bar. The plan shows how seriously the company is treating character IP, even as its own stable of original mascots remains thin.
Sony Creative Products is also using the Yurakucho Museum in Tokyo for immersive character exhibitions, which gives it another place to promote new ideas like Nemu. For now, the sleepless bear looks like one of Sony's clearest bets — but can a stressed-out mascot really become a global brand face?
