Epic Games has released the final version of its Unreal Engine 5.6 game engine. The update is now available to all developers. The main improvements in version 5.6 focus on creating large-scale open worlds capable of running stably on current-generation consoles and PC. The engine has received a number of significant updates.

Hardware ray tracing algorithms have been reworked, increasing the efficiency of the Lumen Global Illumination dynamic lighting system. Optimizations for geometry streaming have been added, designed to minimize hitches when loading large static locations. The MetaHuman toolkit is now integrated directly into the engine core. It has been supplemented with new capabilities, including expanded generation of realistic character bodies.

A reworked Curve Editor and enhanced Motion Trails tools for animation work have been introduced. New Tween Tools have been added. A Physics Control Rig system for setting up procedural physics has appeared. GPU Spawning optimizations for more efficient object creation during gameplay runtime have also been implemented. The animation tools interface has been overhauled for greater intuitiveness. Artificial intelligence and procedural gameplay design systems have been updated.

The effectiveness of some innovations, such as the Nanite Foliage technology for rendering dense vegetation without significant performance loss, was recently demonstrated in The Witcher IV gameplay example from CD Projekt Red. The game's developers are actively collaborating with Epic Games, leveraging the potential of UE 5.6. According to Epic Games, the combination of these improvements allows developers to more efficiently create open worlds striving for a stable 60 frames per second on modern platforms. The full list of changes in Unreal Engine 5.6 is published on the engine's official website.
