Andrzej Sapkowski Comments on Canon Changes and Ciri's Mutations in The Witcher 4 (Updated)

Update: Redanian Intelligence reports Sapkowski quote on Ciri is likely fake. According to their findings, the original Reddit post was a copy of a message from the fan project Wiedźminlandia. While the author of that post did indeed speak with Sapkowski, they confirmed that Ciri and The Witcher 4 were not discussed during the conversation.

The Reddit user behind the viral quote later attempted to clarify the situation in a follow-up post, claiming they overheard a separate discussion about Ciri at another fan event where Sapkowski was present. However, they provided no evidence that such a conversation actually took place.

Original note: Following the debut trailer for The Witcher 4, fans were left wondering: how did Ciri undergo the Trial of the Grasses and become a full-fledged witcher? During a recent appearance at a book festival in Opole, series creator Andrzej Sapkowski was asked how he feels about this apparent “changing the lore.”

As it turns out, Sapkowski has no objections. According to him, there’s nothing in his books that contradicts the premise of the upcoming game.

CDPR sometimes writes or calls with a question—I don’t know why. They are fans; they know the books better than me. Mutations? I never wrote that adult women can’t go through them. Maybe someone did, but it wasn’t me. I don’t know; I haven’t thought about it.
— Andrzej Sapkowski

The fan site Redanian Intelligence noted that, in Kaer Morhen, only boys were subjected to the mutations — many of whom didn’t survive. It was long assumed that a young girl would have even lower odds. In The Witcher 4, Ciri is around 25 years old, and her path to becoming a witcher is expected to play a major role in the story.

The Witcher 4 is not expected to launch before 2027.
