'A disgusting greedy move': Players will have to pay extra for two clans in Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines 2

Just a day after preorders for Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 went live, the game has already landed in controversy. Fans discovered that two vampire clans are locked behind the premium edition, priced at $90.

The standard edition of Bloodlines 2 lets players choose from the Ventrue, Tremere, Brujah, and Banu Haqim clans. Meanwhile, the Shadows & Silk add-on unlocks two additional clans — Lasombra and Toreador.

The expansion promises “new depths of darkness and artistry,” letting players command shadows as a Lasombra or embrace beauty and passion as a Toreador. It also comes with eight new outfits. But since clan choice has a major impact on gameplay, many players blasted the move as greedy.

Just insane. Imagine if you buy a elder scrolls game and yet you had to pay to play as a nord. It's a ridiculous concept.

As a massive fan of the original who has been watching this games development for years. There is zero chance I'm buying this game until I've seen some reviews.

Your greed has made me go from wishlisting Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines 2 to putting it on my Ignore list. Locking playable clans to the most expensive edition is a disgusting greedy move.

The developers haven’t responded to the backlash yet. If they decide to make the clans free, they’ll need to pad out the premium edition with other content.

Bloodlines 2 has had a turbulent development history. Originally led by Hardsuit Labs, the project changed hands after multiple delays. It’s now being developed by The Chinese Room, known for Dear Esther, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 launches on October 21. You can read our hands-on impressions in our preview.
