Victory for fans — Bloodlines 2 devs reconsider paid clans after player backlash

The controversy around paid clans in Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 seems to be paying off. As a reminder, players and media pointed out last week that two of the game’s six vampire clans would only be available to those who purchased the most expensive editions. For $90, buyers would get the base game with four clans — Ventrue, Tremere, Brujah, and Banu Haqim — along with cosmetic items and exclusive access to the Lasombra and Toreador clans.
Developers initially commented that adding Lasombra and Toreador hadn’t been part of the original plan. Publisher Paradox Interactive added fuel to the fire by saying extra content in games isn’t unusual, further angering fans.
A few days later, the devs changed their stance. In a message on the official Discord server, the studio said it would reconsider clan access:
We are listening to your feedback about the Lasombra and Toreador clan access, and we're making adjustments ahead of launch to reflect this. We will share more information about what this means as soon as possible.
The team hasn’t specified what those changes will be. It’s possible the paid clans could be added to the base game, while premium edition owners would receive other bonuses instead.
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 launches October 21 on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. Our impressions of the game can be read at this link.
After experiencing the preview version of Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines 2, I was left with a whirlwind of emotions — both excitement and disappointment. As a fan of the original, I was saddened by many of the developers’ decisions: abandoning the RPG system for the sake of simplification, changing the tone, and removing numerous mechanics that once played a significant role in immersing players in the world. On the other hand, I saw a well-crafted immersive sim with a thoughtful combat system, an intriguing plot, and a different approach to clan differentiation.
