With Death Stranding 2: On the Beach already out in the world, Hideo Kojima has started lifting the curtain on the making of the sequel. A new behind-the-scenes clip, released today on PlayStation’s YouTube channel, shows the filming of a hidden cutscene that unlocks on the player’s birthday.

As it turns out, the shoot coincided with a real celebration as well. The team surprised Elle Fanning — who plays Tomorrow — with a pink cryptobiote cake right on set.

Here’s how Kojima himself described the moment:

A surprise cutscene in Death Stranding 2 that activates on the player's birthday. This is what we shot. That day happened to be Elle’s (Tomorrow) birthday. The OK take had already been shot, but as a backup, we asked for “one more take please,” while secretly preparing a surprise cake for Elle. The other cast members were in on it. During the shoot, I left the set briefly to go get the cake. The take from that moment is the one we actually used in the game. The actor for Tarman couldn’t come to the set due to COVID, so Kevin stepped in

Earlier, Kojima also shared another behind-the-scenes reel, which featured emotional cutscenes with Norman Reedus and Léa Seydoux.

Death Stranding 2 launched on June 26 exclusively for PlayStation 5. Kojima Productions is now focusing on its next two projects: the horror title OD and the espionage thriller Physint.
