Stephen King shares his personal top 10 films — and not everyone is impressed

Stephen King has surprised fans by revealing his all-time favorite movies. The bestselling author listed 10 films he believes are worth watching.
Stephen King’s favorite films:
- Sorcerer (1977);
- The Godfather Part II (1974);
- The Getaway (1994);
- Groundhog Day (1993);
- Casablanca (1942);
- The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1947);
- Jaws (1975);
- Mean Streets (1973);
- Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977);
- Double Indemnity (1944).
When it comes to adaptations of his own work, King has a soft spot for Misery (1990), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), The Green Mile (1999), and Stand by Me (1986). Curiously, he left out the iconic The Shining. You can read more about the best Stephen King adaptations in our dedicated piece.
Recently, another project based on the “Master of Horror’s” work surfaced online. Back in July, we reported on The Institute — a series about gifted children kidnapped for sinister experiments. Next month will also see the premiere of The Long Walk, a dystopian adaptation that had been in the works since the late 20th century.
Not everyone was impressed by King’s list. Some readers suggested adding films like Star Wars, the first Godfather, Lawrence of Arabia, and works by David Lynch and Akira Kurosawa. Others dismissed the selection altogether, saying they had no intention of watching such “old” movies.
